You can play Steam games on an Android handheld with Valve’s free Steam Link app, but the game runs on a separate computer—not on the Android device. You need a compatible Android handheld, a PC running Steam and the game, a suitable network connection, and controls that work with both the handheld and the game.

What you need for Steam Link on Android

  • An Android handheld that can install Steam Link. Valve lists Android 5.0 or newer as the minimum for its Android app. Check the handheld’s Android version and access to Google Play or Valve’s official Android download option before setup. Valve’s Android Steam Link support page
  • A host computer running Steam. The PC must be switched on, Steam must be open, and you must be signed in. That computer runs the game and sends its video and audio to the handheld. Valve’s Steam Remote Play overview
  • A network connecting the PC and handheld. For Valve’s standard Android setup, put both devices on the same network. Valve recommends a wireless 5 GHz router. Google Play also recommends connecting the host PC to the router by Ethernet and connecting the handheld to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. These are performance recommendations, not a guaranteed minimum-speed specification. Valve support · Steam Link on Google Play
  • Usable controls. Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile among supported input options. Other controllers may work, but are not thereby officially supported. The general support list does not certify the built-in buttons on every Android handheld, so check your model’s controls and Steam Link behavior. Valve’s supported-input information
  • The game installed on the host PC. Steam Link streams a game from the computer; it does not install or run the PC game locally on Android.

How to set up Steam Link

  1. Turn on the PC, open Steam, and sign in to the account that has access to the game.
  2. Connect the PC and Android handheld to the same home network. For a more reliable stream, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet and use the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band on the handheld, if available.
  3. Install Steam Link from Google Play, or use Valve’s official Android download option if Google Play is unavailable.
  4. Pair a supported controller or check that the handheld’s built-in controls are recognized and configured for your games.
  5. Open Steam Link and follow its on-screen pairing and connection prompts. Select the host PC, connect, then choose a game to start streaming.

Does Steam Link run games locally on Android?

No. Steam Link is a streaming client: the host computer runs the game, sends video and audio to the Android handheld, and receives input from its controller. Valve summarizes the arrangement this way: “When you play a game using Remote Play, video and audio are sent from your gaming PC to another device.” Valve Steam Remote Play

This distinction matters when choosing a device. The handheld’s local processing power does not determine whether the host PC can run a particular game, but its screen, controls, network connection, and ability to display the stream affect your experience. The PC must also be available whenever you want to play through this setup.

Streaming to Android versus running PC games on a handheld

What to compare Steam Link on Android Local PC-game handheld
Where the game runs On a separate PC running Steam. On the handheld itself.
Does another computer need to be available? Yes. The host PC must be on, running Steam, and reachable. No separate host is needed to run a locally supported game.
Network dependence Depends on the connection between the host and Android client; range and network quality matter. Local play does not rely on streaming from a home PC.
Compatibility depends on The host PC’s ability to run the game, stream quality, Android app support, and usable controls. The handheld’s hardware, operating system, and compatibility with the game.
What Valve’s compatibility documentation establishes It does not certify an Android handheld for games streamed through Steam Link. Valve’s Proton and compatibility documentation addresses Steam Deck and Steam Machine, not general local Steam gaming on Android.

Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Proton as running Windows executables on Steam Deck and Steam Machine’s Linux-based operating system. That is not evidence that an ordinary Android handheld can install and run the Steam PC catalog locally. Similarly, a Steam Deck compatibility rating applies to the Deck/Machine context; Valve notes that a “Playable” rating may involve user configuration. It is not an Android device certification. What affects whether a game is playable?

There is no universal result for every game, handheld, and Wi-Fi setup. For streaming, the PC must be able to run the game; the network must carry the stream reliably; and the handheld’s display and controls must suit the game. Check the specific device’s Android version, Steam Link availability, built-in control support, screen orientation, and aspect ratio rather than assuming all Android handhelds behave alike.

App behavior can also vary by device. For example, the Steam Link Google Play changelog notes a coordinate-scaling fix for 4:3 devices such as the AYANEO Pocket AIR Mini. That is a specific app change, not a general guarantee about every 4:3 handheld. Steam Link on Google Play

If the stream stutters or controls do not work

  • For an unstable stream: try Ethernet for the host PC, switch the handheld to the router’s 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, and move closer to the router or reduce obstacles. These are Valve and Google Play recommendations, not a requirement to buy new equipment if your current network works well.
  • If the host does not appear: confirm that the PC is on, Steam is open and signed in, and both devices are on the same network.
  • If input is unreliable: pair a controller from Valve’s supported list or check device-specific documentation for the handheld’s built-in controls. DualShock 4 support listed by Valve requires Android 9.0 or newer.
  • If the picture or controls seem misaligned: check the handheld’s orientation and aspect ratio, and whether Steam Link has a device-specific update relevant to its display.
