The specific documents depend on the exchange, your account, and your jurisdiction; there is no universal document list.
What “proof of funds” means
Exchanges may use “proof of funds” informally for records about a particular deposit or transaction. They may also distinguish source of funds (SOF)—the origin of money used for a specific transaction—from source of wealth (SOW)—how you accumulated wealth over time. Kraken gives examples including income, savings, investments, property, and inheritance in its source-of-funds and source-of-wealth guidance.
A transfer receipt can establish where a deposit came from without explaining how you acquired the underlying money or crypto. If the request asks about both, address both separately.
How to respond
- Verify the request and its deadline. Sign in by navigating to the exchange’s official website or app yourself. Read the request, note the date range and any deadline, and use the submission method it specifies. Kraken describes requests for additional information as part of security and regulatory processes in its additional-information guidance. Coinbase says to submit documents through its secure portal.
- Pin down what the exchange is asking. Is it asking where a specific deposit originated, how you acquired the crypto, how your overall wealth was built, or some combination? Use the wording in the request and answer every part.
- Write a short, factual timeline. State the source, relevant approximate dates and amounts, and how the funds moved into the exchange. For example: salary paid into a bank account, funds used to buy crypto, then crypto withdrawn to the exchange. This is a practical way to organize your response, not a universal required form. Include only details you can support.
- Choose records that connect the source to the transfer. Use the examples below as a starting point, then follow the exchange’s instructions for your account and region.
- Reconcile the details before sending. Check names or account identifiers, dates, amounts, transaction records, wallet addresses, and exchange statements. Binance says supporting evidence should be consistent with exchange statements, blockchain records, or tax documents in its proof-of-address and source-of-wealth guidance.
- Submit through the official channel and keep a copy. If the request is unclear, contact support through the exchange’s official site or app and ask which record or date range is missing. Do not upload sensitive records through a link you cannot verify.
What documents do I need?
Match the evidence to the claimed origin and the path into the exchange. These are examples from exchange guidance, not guarantees of acceptance.

| Funds or crypto source | Records that may help | What the records should connect |
|---|---|---|
| Employment income | Recent payslips, bank statements showing salary deposits, tax documents, or an employer letter. | Show how the income reached the bank account or service used to acquire or transfer the funds. |
| Savings or investments | Savings, brokerage, investment, or retirement account statements. Kraken also lists tax filings and pension award letters as possible wealth evidence. | For a particular transfer, include the transfer record as well if the exchange asks for it; a balance alone may not show the movement. |
| Inheritance or asset transfer | Legal documents showing the inheritance or transfer, with bank evidence where relevant. | Explain how the legal transfer relates to the funds deposited. |
| Sale, rental, business, or freelance income | Sale or lease documents, invoices, business records, bank statements, or tax documents, as relevant. | Identify the seller or owner and show the proceeds or payment path. |
| Crypto from another exchange or hosted wallet | An exchange statement or transaction records that identify you and the wallet address; include withdrawal records from the sending service and, when available, the matching receiving transaction. | Show that the crypto left an account or service associated with you and arrived at the exchange account in question. |
| Crypto from an external or unhosted wallet | Wallet transaction history showing dates, transaction type, currency, amount, and wallet address, plus an identifier such as your name or email. A crypto tax report may also help document history. | If asked for the crypto’s origin, explain how you originally acquired it; the last wallet transfer alone may not answer that question. |
| Mining | Mining payout statements or other records confirming mining activity or equipment ownership. | If the crypto later moved through another platform, include the subsequent sale or transfer record too. |
| Funds already held at the exchange | Evidence of how the funds were earned and a record showing the funds or crypto transferred into the account. Kraken notes that one bank statement may sometimes show both salary deposits and transfers. | Do not assume one document will satisfy every request; use the records that address the actual question. |
Coinbase’s guidance for external-wallet crypto also identifies tax documents or capital-gains-and-losses reports generated by software such as Koinly or Blockpit as possible supporting records. A tax report is one possible source of history, not a required purchase or a promise that an exchange will accept it.
How to handle complicated or incomplete records
Several sources or a long history
Organize the explanation by source and attach the available records for each part. For example, separate employment savings from inherited funds rather than blending them into one unexplained total. Kraken notes that multiple events or income streams can call for documents for each, and that layered business ownership or histories spanning years and jurisdictions can take more work to document in its additional-information guidance.

A record no longer exists
Say plainly which record is unavailable and, if you know, why. Identify what you can provide instead and ask the exchange whether that alternative is useful. Do not alter statements, invent transaction history, or present an estimate as a documented fact.
Mistakes to avoid
- Sending only a screenshot of the exchange balance. A balance may show what is held now, but it does not necessarily establish how the assets were acquired or transferred.
- Confusing source of funds with source of wealth. Evidence for one deposit may not explain how you accumulated wealth overall.
- Leaving mismatches unexplained. If names, dates, or amounts differ across records, explain the discrepancy rather than letting the documents appear inconsistent.
- Assuming one exchange’s checklist applies everywhere. Follow the actual request for your account and region; document examples differ by exchange and case.
- Using an unverified upload link. Navigate independently to the exchange’s official app or site and use its stated secure submission route.
What if the request feels alarming?
A request for records does not, by itself, mean you have done something wrong. Kraken Support states, “This does not mean you have done anything wrong!” and explains that a source-of-funds or source-of-wealth document may be requested because of a customer’s country or circumstances, including being a student or unemployed. See Kraken’s explanation of additional-information requests.
