NBA preseason games are exhibitions played before the regular season. They use NBA rules, but there is no league-wide preseason minutes allotment for starters or other players. A listed starter may play briefly, sit out, or take on a different role from game to game, so read each lineup and workload in its specific context.
What NBA preseason games are for
Preseason sits between training camp and the regular season. It gives teams a chance to use game situations to examine lineups, roles and execution. The NBA schedule labels these as preseason games; exhibition results and individual performances should not be treated as guarantees about regular-season outcomes.
For the 2026-27 season, the NBA’s key-dates page, updated October 2, 2026, lists preseason games beginning October 3, opening-day rosters being set October 19, and the regular season beginning October 20. It also identifies international preseason games in Quebec City, Macao and Vancouver. Check the current NBA schedule for a particular matchup, venue and start time, since listings can change. The NBA 2026-27 key dates page has the season-calendar details.

What a starting lineup tells you—and what it does not
NBA Rule No. 3 requires that, at least 30 minutes before scheduled tip, scorers be given the name and number of each player who will start. That is a reporting deadline for the starting five, not a promise about how long those players will play or whether they will have the same roles in the regular season. See NBA Rule No. 3: Players, Substitutes and Coaches.
#1 Best Overall
- Wilson NBA Authentic Indoor/Outdoor Basketball - Brown, Size 7 - 29.5"
- Dual Depth Technology: A re-engineered channel creates a deeper pocket to improve grip and enhance your feel for the game.
- Moisture Management Cover: Enhanced cover wicks away moisture to create extreme grip, superior flexibility and softer touch

- Air Retention: A specialized inflation retention lining creates longer lasting air retention.
A familiar player in the opening group may have a short stint; a regular starter may sit out; or a coach may try a different combination. The official rules describe lineup and substitution procedures, but do not prescribe a standard number of preseason minutes for starters, young players or rotation candidates. Treat playing time as team- and game-specific, and check current availability information for the game you are watching.
What to watch during a preseason game
Lineup fit
When a starting group is new or changed, watch how its players share the court. Notice whether they organize the offense and defense clearly and whether their roles appear compatible. One game can show how a group functioned that night; it cannot establish that the same lineup will be used once the regular season begins.

Roles and ball-handling
Look for who brings the ball up, initiates actions and makes decisions alongside established teammates. These details can help you understand how a coach is trying a group, without assuming that a preseason assignment is a fixed regular-season role.
Rotations and substitutions
Note which combinations appear together and which bench players get opportunities. A rotation in one preseason game is evidence about that game, not proof of the final regular-season rotation. Substitution procedures are covered in the NBA’s 2025-26 Official Playing Rules.

Young and end-of-rotation players
Preseason can offer a look at players who may have fewer regular-season opportunities. An appearance, a productive stretch or a starting assignment by itself does not establish that a player has secured a roster spot.
Availability and workload
If a notable player sits or plays only briefly, record that as a game-specific availability or workload fact. It is not, on its own, evidence of injury severity or a season-long role. For a particular game, use current team or league availability information rather than inferring a cause from minutes alone.

Execution rather than the final score
Watch communication, spacing, transition habits and whether the team’s intended style is visible. These are useful viewing cues, not validated predictors of later results. The official sources do not provide a study establishing how well preseason performance predicts regular-season results.
How to compare preseason games or players
For a practical side-by-side comparison, track observable details rather than trying to turn one exhibition into a forecast:

- Availability: whether a player appeared and any confirmed game-specific status.
This is a viewing framework, not an official NBA rating system. The official sources establish the season calendar, lineup-reporting deadline, substitution procedures and schedule designation; they do not provide a typical preseason starter-minutes figure or a formula for judging roster security.
