A garden can support breeding too, but that requires milkweed for eggs and caterpillars in addition to nectar flowers. The right plants and bloom times depend on local conditions and when monarchs pass through.
What monarchs need at a stopover
Adult monarchs feed on nectar from many kinds of flowers. During migration, patches with abundant nectar give them places to feed along the route. Shelter matters as well: vegetation can offer a break from harsh weather and exposure. In a 2022 account of waystations in Texas, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service At-Risk Species Coordinator Katie Boyer said, “Monarchs can travel about 50 miles a day when they’re migrating, so having these pockets of habitat for them to stop over along that route is really important.” That is her attributed figure, not a universal daily rate for every monarch.
A stopover planting does not need milkweed to provide adult nectar and shelter. Milkweed is essential when the goal also includes breeding: monarchs lay eggs on milkweed, and caterpillars eat milkweed as their only food. U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service: Monarch Waystations support butterfly migration and the agency’s monarch species profile describe these distinct habitat needs.
Choose plants for your region and the migration season
There is no single plant list that fits every monarch garden. Choose nectar flowers suited to your local climate, soil, and moisture, and aim for a sequence of blooms through the season—especially during the period when migrants pass through your area. Different milkweed species may mature and flower at different times, which can extend the period when a planting offers resources.

Regional context matters, too. Eastern North American monarchs migrate toward central Mexico, while western monarchs primarily overwinter at coastal sites in California. Local migration timing and suitable plants differ, so a planting designed around one route should not be treated as a universal recipe. Monarch Joint Venture’s migration overview provides context on migration and stopover habitat.
Use Monarch Watch’s waystation guidance as a garden checklist
Monarch Watch’s figures below are program recommendations, not biological minimums required for every useful habitat. The program says there is no minimum area for certification, although waystations function best at 100 square feet or more; the area may be split among sites.
Rank #2
- Professional Version: Monarch butterfly habitat is more square, sits straight, does not rock or move.
- Five mesh panels for good airflow. Clear vinyl window panel for students and families an unforgettable opportunity to watch caterpillars change into chrysalides and then emerge as beautiful Monarch, Painted Lady or Black Swallowtail Butterflies.
- Collapsible design for easy storage and reusable, the unfolded measures: 15.7 x 15.7 x 23.6 inches. Tall and wide, can hold large 2 milkweed plants. The wings of a new butterfly are not risk of breaking when trying to stir up.
- Large zipper side opening for easy feed your butterflies, then release them into the wild. Butterflies will often land on little hands and faces before flying away.
- Includes a quick start guide manual to raise butterflies.
- Sun: Aim for at least six hours of sunlight a day.
- Area: If practical, plan for 100 square feet or more, while recognizing that this is a program guideline for best function, not a minimum for certification.
- Soil and drainage: Many native milkweeds and nectar plants do well in well-drained soil, but select species to match the moisture and soil conditions at your site.
- Shelter and spacing: Place nectar plants and milkweed relatively close together for protective cover, without crowding them. Follow each plant’s spacing needs.
- Milkweed for breeding: If supporting caterpillars, plant at least 10 milkweeds across two or more species. Monarch Watch also accepts more than 10 plants of one species in its recommendation.
- Nectar through the season: Include several annual, biennial, or perennial nectar plants that bloom sequentially or continuously during the growing season. For a migration stop, make sure some bloom while migrants are passing locally.
- Ongoing care: Plan for appropriate watering, thinning, mulching, and removal of invasive plants. Avoid insecticide use as appropriate to the site.

Buy plants with pesticide treatment in mind
Monarch Watch advises choosing plants that were not treated with systemic pesticides during propagation. Ask nurseries how plants were grown, and consider local nurseries or plant sales run by native-plant and environmental organizations. If buying seeds, confirm that the milkweed species suits your location and check the seller’s claims about seed identity and pesticide treatment; a generic mix is not automatically appropriate for your region.

Stopover or breeding garden? Match the planting to its purpose
| Habitat goal | What to include |
|---|---|
| Adult stopover | Nectar flowers that bloom during local migration, plus vegetation that provides shelter. |
| Breeding habitat as well as a stopover | The same nectar and shelter, plus milkweed for egg-laying and caterpillar food. |
Monarch Watch reported 58,524 registered Monarch Waystation habitats as of September 8, 2026. That is a dated count in the program’s registry, not a count of all monarch habitat.
Available sources do not quantify how much a particular garden feature increases stopover visits or monarch survival. The guidance above identifies useful habitat features and program recommendations, not a measured guarantee of results.
