Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In an August 5, 2011, roundup, DataCenterKnowledge covered three separate data-center industry developments: Fusion-io’s agreement to acquire IO Turbine, shareholder approval of Level 3 Communications’ proposed acquisition of Global Crossing, and Eaton’s announcement of 480/277V configurations for its ePDU power distribution line. The announcements were at different stages: the Fusion-io deal was an agreement, while the Level 3–Global Crossing deal still needed regulatory approvals.
What the August 2011 roundup covered
| Company or companies | Announcement reported | Status as reported on August 5, 2011 |
|---|---|---|
| Fusion-io and IO Turbine | Agreement for Fusion-io to acquire IO Turbine, a provider of caching solutions for virtual environments; up to approximately $95 million in consideration, subject to purchase-price adjustments. | Agreement announced; closing had not been reported. |
| Level 3 Communications and Global Crossing | Stockholders of both companies approved Level 3’s proposed acquisition of Global Crossing. | Regulatory approvals were still required; the companies expected to close before the end of 2011. |
| Eaton | 480V configurations for Eaton’s ePDU power distribution line, intended for facilities receiving 480V AC and supporting 277V power supplies. | Product-line announcement; the roundup did not establish details about current Eaton models. |
What was Fusion-io acquiring?
Fusion-io announced a definitive agreement to acquire IO Turbine, whose software provided caching solutions for virtual environments. DataCenterKnowledge reported consideration of up to approximately $95 million, subject to purchase-price adjustments, and said 20 IO Turbine employees were expected to join Fusion-io’s engineering team upon closing. Those terms describe the announced agreement and anticipated integration, not proof that the acquisition had closed by the roundup’s publication date.
Fusion-io Chairman and Chief Executive Officer David Flynn described the software’s purpose this way: “IO Turbine’s software is uniquely architected to take advantage of flash memory in the server to solve the I/O bottlenecks, the inhibitor to the adoption of enterprise virtualization,”
What happened with Level 3 and Global Crossing?
Stockholders at both companies approved Level 3’s proposed acquisition of Global Crossing. That approval was one step in the transaction, not the same as regulatory clearance or completion: the August 5, 2011, roundup said regulatory approvals were still needed and the companies expected to close before year-end.

A TMCnet merger-news archive later lists the acquisition as completed on October 4, 2011. In subsequent corporate history, Level 3 was acquired by CenturyLink, whose successor is Lumen Technologies; Global Crossing’s successor was Level 3. These later developments are distinct from the status known when the 2011 roundup appeared.
What was Eaton’s 480/277V ePDU announcement?
Eaton announced 480V configurations for its ePDU power distribution line. The 2011 article said these were intended to eliminate the need for step-down transformers in facilities receiving utility power at 480V AC and to support 277V power supplies. It attributed to Eaton the rationale that distributing power at higher voltage could reduce losses compared with 208V. That is the article’s account of the announcement, not current engineering guidance or confirmation of any present-day model’s specifications.

What this historical roundup does—and does not—establish
- It records three 2011 announcements: a proposed software-company acquisition, shareholder approval of a separate proposed acquisition, and new voltage configurations for a power distribution line.
- It distinguishes approval from closing for Level 3 and Global Crossing, and an acquisition agreement from a completed transaction for Fusion-io and IO Turbine.
- It does not compare current rack PDUs, verify current Eaton products, or establish that any present model is compatible with a particular facility. Current equipment selection requires checking input voltage and phase, outlet type and count, input connector, rated current, metering or switching features, and installation requirements against the facility’s needs.
