Physical bullion gives you direct possession of gold, but you must handle its premium, delivery, storage, insurance, and resale. Shares in a physically backed gold ETF or trust are easier to trade through a brokerage account, but they carry fund expenses, trading costs, market-price risk, and a custody structure you should understand. Neither is universally cheaper or more liquid: compare the exact bullion quote and buyback terms with the exact fund’s costs and prospectus.
Physical gold and gold ETF shares are different kinds of ownership
Buying a bullion bar or coin means you own the metal directly, either in your possession or through a storage arrangement. The World Gold Council (WGC), an industry association, describes investment bars and coins as being sold at a premium over spot, with the buyer responsible for delivery, storage, and insurance. Its broad descriptions include bars with stated purities from 99.5% to 99.99% and investment coins commonly ranging from 91.67% (22 carat) to 99.99% (24 carat); these ranges do not guarantee the specifications of every product. WGC: How to invest in different gold assets.
A physically backed gold ETF or trust share is a security representing an interest in a fund or trust arrangement, not a bullion coin you can take home. The fund’s structure determines how gold is held, what rights shareholders have, and whether any redemption route exists. “Gold ETF” is not one uniform legal structure, so read the specific prospectus rather than assuming every product works the same way.
Compare the costs you actually pay
For a fair comparison, look beyond an advertised price or expense ratio. Include the costs of buying, holding, and selling the specific product over your intended holding period.

| Cost or feature | Physical bars and bullion coins | Physically backed ETF or trust shares |
|---|---|---|
| At purchase | Premium above spot; possible transaction fees and delivery costs. Manufacturing costs generally make coins costlier per ounce than small bars, and small bars costlier per ounce than larger bars, according to the WGC retail FAQ. | Any brokerage commission plus the bid-ask spread. Check the broker’s terms and the fund’s trading conditions. |
| While holding | Storage and insurance may apply; costs depend on the storage method and provider. | Annual fund expenses reduce returns. The exact expense is in the current fund materials. |
| At sale | Resale price depends on the product, its condition and provenance, buyer access, and the dealer’s buyback terms. | The selling spread and brokerage charges may apply; the market price can be above or below NAV. |
The WGC retail FAQ lists premiums, transaction fees, and potentially storage and insurance among physical-gold costs. Ask a dealer for the purchase premium and the price it would pay to buy the same item back; the difference is more useful than comparing the retail price with spot alone. WGC: Retail Gold Investment FAQs.
For ETFs, the expense ratio is not the entire trading cost. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says brokerage commissions and other trading costs may apply. The bid is the highest price a buyer is offering, and the ask is the lowest price a seller will accept; the gap is the spread. The SEC calls it a hidden cost because it reduces potential returns. Its illustration—not a current market quote—shows an investor buying 200 shares at an ask of $60 and immediately selling at a bid of $59.50, for a $100 loss. Historical fees should not be mistaken for current rates: the WGC reported that physically backed gold ETF management fees ranged from 7 to 297 basis points per year, with many U.S. and European funds charging less than 20 basis points, using data as of September 2020. Check current fund documents for today’s expense ratio rather than relying on those dated figures. WGC: Global gold ETFs: A popular gateway to the gold market.
Custody and risks depend on your choice
Physical bullion: you control the storage decision
Keeping bullion yourself offers direct possession, but puts security, access, and insurance decisions on you. A rented bank or storage box and professional vaulting involve different fees, access rules, and safeguards. The WGC says professional-vaulted gold is typically easier to sell, insurance is often included in the storage fee, and theft or flood-damage risk is likely reduced. These are general industry statements, not guarantees about any provider. Before using a service, check who legally owns the metal, how holdings are recorded and audited, what insurance covers, how you can access or redeem the gold, and what fees apply.

ETF or trust shares: inspect the product’s legal and custody terms
The SEC advises investors to review the prospectus, holdings, NAV and closing price, premium-or-discount history, and median bid-ask spread. An ETF’s market price may be higher or lower than its net asset value (NAV). Trading and arbitrage by authorized participants are expected to help bring prices toward NAV, but premiums or discounts can persist, and there is a risk that a trading market will not develop.
A specific example shows why product documents matter. The abrdn Gold ETF Trust’s 2025 Form 10-K says its objective is to reflect the price of gold bullion less expenses and that shares represent an interest in trust-owned physical gold, apart from temporary unallocated gold held to facilitate creation or redemption. The filing identifies risks related to unallocated gold and the custodian. Those statements describe that trust, not every gold ETF or trust. abrdn Gold ETF Trust: 2025 Form 10-K.

Which one is more liquid?
ETF shares have an exchange-traded route to buy or sell during market hours, which can be more convenient than finding a bullion buyer. But actual execution depends on the specific fund’s trading volume, spread, market availability, and how closely its share price tracks NAV. Use the SEC’s recommended checks—especially the median spread and premium-or-discount history—rather than treating exchange listing as a guarantee of a good sale price.
Physical gold must be sold to a dealer or another buyer, and the sale price depends on the item and the available resale channel. Storage arrangements can affect convenience: the WGC says professional-vaulted bullion is typically easier to sell, but verify the vault’s own access and sale process.

Gold’s market-wide trading activity does not settle the liquidity of a particular retail product. The WGC’s 2025 primer estimates average daily gold trading at US$361 billion, or about 3,000 tonnes; that figure describes the overall gold market, not the resale market for a specific coin or the spread and depth of a particular ETF. WGC: Gold Market Primer: Market size and structure.
How to decide for your situation
- Choose physical bullion if direct possession matters to you and you are prepared to compare dealer premiums and buyback offers, arrange transport, and make a storage and insurance plan.
- Consider ETF or trust shares if brokerage-based trading is more important than holding the metal yourself and you are comfortable reviewing the product’s expenses, spread, custody arrangement, and shareholder rights.
Before buying either, compare the same intended amount and holding period. For bullion, obtain the purchase premium, buyback quote, delivery terms, and storage and insurance costs. For a fund, check the current annual expense, brokerage charges, median bid-ask spread, price-to-NAV history, holdings, and prospectus terms for custody and redemption. Tax treatment depends on your location and the exact product; consult current local guidance and the product’s tax documents rather than applying another jurisdiction’s rules.
