A familiar company name, polished offer letter, or listing on a real job platform does not prove the recruiter represents that employer. The FTC cautions that there is no sure-fire way to spot every job scam, so treat warning signs as reasons to pause and check—not as proof by themselves.
How do I verify a job offer?
- Pause before sharing anything sensitive. Do not send identity documents, Social Security details, bank information, or payment because a message looks official or says the opportunity is urgent.
- Find the actual opening independently. Type the employer’s known web address yourself or search for its official careers page. Check whether the specific role and location appear there. Do not rely only on a forwarded job description, logo, or recruiter-supplied link. The FTC recommends checking the organization’s official website: Job scammers are looking to hire you.
- Verify the recruiter separately. Contact the employer using a phone number or address published on its official website. Ask whether the recruiter and the specific opening are genuine. Do not use contact information supplied only in the message you are checking.
- Check whether the contact details fit. A personal email account instead of a company domain, an interview conducted only by email or chat, poor writing, unusually high pay claims, or pressure to provide personal or financial information are reasons to investigate. A company-domain email is a useful consistency check, not proof that the sender is genuine.
- Search for warning reports and get another view. Search the company and recruiter names with words such as “scam,” “complaint,” or “fraud,” and discuss the offer with someone you trust. Finding no complaints does not establish that the offer is legitimate.
Use employer-controlled channels you locate yourself as your primary check. An official careers page or published phone number is stronger evidence than a link or number supplied only by an unverified recruiter.
Is this recruiter real—or impersonating a company?
Scammers can use a real company’s name and logo, produce polished job materials, and post on legitimate job platforms. Those details may make a message look credible, but they do not show that the sender works for the company or that the vacancy exists. The FTC describes impersonation schemes involving familiar companies and job platforms in its 2023 alert about fake jobs on LinkedIn and other platforms.
A recruiter asking for your Social Security number, driver’s license details, or bank information before a substantive interview and independently verified hiring process is a reason to stop and confirm what is happening. Scammers may present these requests as routine employment paperwork or direct-deposit setup. The FTC warns about these early requests in its job-scam guidance.

Should I give a recruiter my Social Security number?
Do not provide it just because someone says it is needed to move an application forward. First verify the specific opening and recruiter through the employer’s independently located website or contact channel, and make sure you have reached the employer’s genuine hiring process. An early request for Social Security, driver’s license, or bank details—especially before a substantive interview—is a stop-and-check moment, not a reason to comply quickly.
Is it normal to pay for work equipment or training?
Do not pay to get hired or to receive promised equipment or training. The FTC says honest employers will not ask applicants to pay upfront fees for a job or equipment. In one common pattern, a supposed employer sends a check or invoice and tells the applicant to buy equipment, send back part of the money, or pay through cash or a payment app. The promised reimbursement may never arrive.

- TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.
Do not deposit an employer’s check and forward money, buy gift cards, or pay an equipment invoice from the check. A bank may initially make deposited funds appear available before discovering that a check is fake; the depositor can then be responsible for the money. The FTC’s Job Scams guidance explains these payment traps.
Be cautious, too, of a service that charges you upfront for supposed access to jobs or placement. The FTC says legitimate placement firms and headhunters typically receive fees from hiring companies, not prospective employees. That general guidance is not a guarantee about every unusual professional arrangement, so verify the terms and the organization before paying.

What about unexpected remote-job texts?
An unsolicited text promising easy remote work or vague duties deserves extra caution, particularly if it asks you to reply or engage before there is a verifiable hiring process. The FTC’s 2026 alert describes fake job texts that can develop into fake-check or task scams. Verify the employer and opening independently, and do not put your own money into a task or pay to unlock promised earnings. See the FTC’s That job offer text is probably a scam.

- Contact your bank or payment provider promptly if you shared bank details, deposited a check, or sent money. Explain what happened and ask what steps apply to the specific information or payment involved; recovery steps depend on what you shared and how it was sent.
- Report suspected fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Reporting is useful, but it does not by itself guarantee that a loss will be reversed or that your identity is protected. The FTC’s job scam guidance and 2026 alert provide reporting advice.
