Choose the Kindle Colorsoft if you read comics, graphic novels, illustrated guides, or cookbooks where color adds useful information. Choose the Kindle Paperwhite if you mainly read prose and prefer Amazon’s longer stated battery-life estimate. Both models in Amazon’s cited lineup have 7-inch displays and are described as waterproof, so screen size and water resistance do not decide this comparison.
What separates the Colorsoft from the Paperwhite?
The main difference is the display: Colorsoft shows color, while Paperwhite is monochrome. Amazon positions Colorsoft for color covers, images, and highlights, and names comics, graphic novels, travel guides, and cookbooks as examples. For novels and other mostly text-based books, color may add little to the reading experience.
Both are 7-inch devices in Amazon’s current lineup description. That means Colorsoft is not the larger-screen option over this Paperwhite generation. Amazon also describes both as waterproof, so that feature alone does not favor one over the other.
Which Kindle should you choose?
Choose Kindle Colorsoft if color helps you read
Colorsoft is the more suitable choice if you regularly read content whose illustrations, maps, or other images benefit from color. Amazon also identifies colored highlights as a feature. You can check Kindle Colorsoft’s current listing for the configuration available in your region.

Choose Kindle Paperwhite if you mostly read prose
If your library is primarily novels and other text, Paperwhite is the straightforward fit. Amazon’s stated maximum battery estimate is longer than Colorsoft’s, which may matter if you want to charge less often. You can check Kindle Paperwhite’s current listing for regional options.
Battery life: compare the estimates carefully
Amazon lists Colorsoft at up to eight weeks of battery life and Paperwhite at up to three months. These are manufacturer estimates, not results from an independent head-to-head test; actual runtime can vary with use and settings. Amazon’s Colorsoft announcement also says its Signature Edition has USB-C and wireless charging, alongside an auto-adjusting front light. Verify the precise regional model before relying on a particular feature.

Rank #3
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Amazon’s 2024 Paperwhite announcement said page turns were 25% faster than on its predecessor. That comparison is against an earlier Paperwhite generation, not a Colorsoft-versus-Paperwhite test, so it does not establish which of these two turns pages faster. Amazon specifications provide the stated features and battery estimates; they do not establish independent measurements of color fidelity, text sharpness, or real-world battery duration.
