Make your family wildfire evacuation plan before fire season: learn how local alerts and evacuation zones work, agree on contacts and meeting places, prepare individualized go bags, and practice who does what. Your county or municipal emergency-management agency and local fire agency—not a general checklist—are the source for current routes, orders, and shelter arrangements.
Start with local alerts, zones, and instructions
Bookmark your county or municipal emergency-management service, local fire agency, and official alert channel. Find out how warnings reach your household and learn the local terms for evacuation warnings and orders, the zones that apply to your address, and where authorities direct evacuees to go. Those systems vary by jurisdiction; the CAL FIRE preparedness guidance and National Weather Service wildfire guidance offer general advice, not a current route map for your neighborhood.
Plan how you will receive official information if power or home internet fails. A battery-powered emergency radio can be one backup; keep it with working batteries and know which local station or official source carries emergency information. During an incident, follow current directions from local authorities rather than relying on a saved map or assuming a familiar road is open.
Agree on contacts and meeting places
Write down each household member’s mobile number and important medical or support contacts. Choose one nearby meeting point for a sudden separation and a second point outside the neighborhood if returning home is not possible. Select an out-of-area contact whom each person can reach to report their status. Keep the details on paper as well as on phones.

Explain the plan to children in an age-appropriate way, and coordinate pickup and communication arrangements with schools, daycare providers, workplaces, caregivers, and anyone else who may be responsible for a family member. The NWS-hosted family disaster plan recommends two meeting places and an out-of-state check-in contact; use a contact who is reachable and make sure everyone knows how to use the plan.
Choose more than one way out
Identify at least two practical ways to leave your neighborhood and a place outside the affected area where your household could reunite. Review local evacuation guidance and identify possible shelters or lodging. The NWS-hosted Red Cross wildfire checklist advises planning two ways out and choosing an outside meeting place.

What should I pack in a wildfire evacuation go bag?
Use portable bags or containers that household members can actually carry. A preassembled family emergency supply kit can be a starting point, but check and personalize its contents rather than assuming it includes your medicines, documents, accessibility supplies, or child and pet items.

The NWS-hosted family disaster plan lists a three-day water supply of one gallon per person per day, along with nonperishable food. The Red Cross wildfire checklist separately calls for a seven-day supply of medications and medical items. Follow current local guidance and individual medical advice for your household.
- Water and food: drinking water and nonperishable food that suit household members’ needs.
- Health and hygiene: prescription medicines and medical supplies, first aid items, and personal hygiene supplies.

List medicines and dosages, medical equipment, batteries and power cords, eyeglasses, hearing aids, mobility aids, communication supports, and essential documents. Decide who gathers each item and who assists each child, older adult, or person who may need help leaving. Ready.gov’s wildfire guidance specifically calls out medical equipment, batteries or power cords, eyeglasses, hearing aids, and specialized items for children, older adults, and people with disabilities or other access and functional needs.
Include animals in the plan: assign who retrieves each pet, keep carriers and leashes accessible, and check local animal evacuation and shelter instructions ahead of time. Assign roles before an evacuation
Decide who checks official alerts, who collects children or other dependents, who gathers pets, who brings the go bags, and how household members will communicate if they are apart. Make sure each person knows the backup plan if the person assigned to a task is unavailable.
At an evacuation order, follow local authorities’ instructions and leave promptly with people and pets. CAL FIRE’s guidance says, “Give your household the best chance of surviving a wildfire by being ready to go and evacuating early.” It describes protective clothing—such as long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, sturdy shoes or boots, a cap, face covering, and goggles or glasses—but immediate evacuation takes priority. Home-preparation or defense steps are conditional on having time and a safe opportunity; they should not delay departure.
Practice and update the plan
Walk through the contact plan, meeting places, and departure roles so everyone knows what to do. Revisit the plan when household members, medicines, vehicles, pets, school or work arrangements, or local guidance change. NWS family preparedness guidance recommends practice, and its weather-ready family checklist recommends an annual review; choose a schedule that keeps your household’s information current.
