Sometimes—but there is no yes-or-no answer for every skin-worn wearable. Check the current guidance for your exact watch, tracker, sensor, and band. Sweat, a quick shower, pool swimming, and diving are different exposures; a water-resistance rating does not automatically approve them all.
Check the device and its limits first
Look up the exact model in its current manufacturer instructions. Water resistance differs between product families and models, and the band or adhesive can have different limits from the device itself. A rating is not a general promise that a wearable is safe in every water activity.
Keep these exposures separate when checking guidance:
- Sweat: Exercise exposure may be permitted even when swimming is not.
- Showering: Soap, shampoo, and conditioner can affect device materials or irritate skin, even if plain water exposure is allowed.
- Swimming: Permission may apply only to shallow pool or ocean swimming, not deep submersion or fast-moving water.
- Other water exposure: Diving, water skiing, surfing, hot tubs, saunas, and pressure jets are not implied by a depth rating.
What the manufacturers say
| Device | Shower and swimming guidance | Limits and care |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Apple says exercise and sweat exposure are okay. Series 2 and later may be used for shallow-water pool or ocean swimming; Series 1 and the first-generation Apple Watch should not be submerged. Apple advises avoiding showering and soapy water. | Apple specifies 50 meters under ISO standard 22810:2010 for Series 2 and later, and 100 meters under the same standard for Apple Watch Ultra and later. Ultra models are permitted for specified higher-risk activities, including recreational scuba diving up to 40 m. These specifications do not mean every water activity is appropriate. Some bands are not water resistant. After swimming, lightly rinse Series 2 and later with warm fresh water and dry thoroughly; after heavy sweating, clean and dry the watch, band, and skin. Apple water-resistance guidance |
| Google/Fitbit | Many models are water resistant to 50 m and designed for swimming. Google/Fitbit recommends removing the wearable for showers to reduce exposure to soaps, shampoos, and conditioners. | Resistance may diminish after drops, chemical exposure, or high-velocity water. Leather, metal, and woven accessory bands may not be suitable for getting wet. Fitbit recommends a secure, not-too-tight fit; for exercise, position the device 2–3 finger widths above the wrist bone, then lower and loosen it afterward. Clean the wrist and band, and dry the device after it gets wet. Google/Fitbit water-resistance guidance and Fitbit product-care guidance |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch/Fit models covered by Samsung UK | Samsung’s guidance covers specified Watch3/4/5, Watch Active/Active2, and Galaxy Fit/Fit2/Fit E models. It permits exercise sweat and swimming in pools or shallow water. The 2018 Galaxy Watch is specifically excluded from pool and sea swimming. | Samsung describes its 5ATM test as 50 metres of fresh water for 10 minutes with the device stationary, and its IPX8 test as 1.5 m of fresh water for 30 minutes. These are test conditions, not instructions to dive to those depths. Samsung warns against diving, snorkeling, water skiing, surfing, fast-moving water, and pressure washers. Salt or disinfectants, impact, heat, sauna or steam-room exposure, and disassembly can affect protection. Rinse and dry after swimming; leather and hybrid bands are not water resistant. | FreeStyle Libre sensor covered by Abbott’s Egypt FAQ | Abbott says the sensor covered by this FAQ can be worn while bathing, showering, swimming, or exercising. | The FAQ gives a maximum depth of 1 metre (3 feet) and a maximum submersion duration of 30 minutes. It says the adhesive is designed to keep the sensor in place for up to 14 days. This is location- and product-specific guidance; check the manual and local Abbott instructions rather than applying these limits to another sensor or region. Abbott Egypt FAQ |

Why a water-resistance rating is not a permission slip
Ratings describe specified test conditions. Real use can involve movement, water pressure, impacts, soaps, chlorine, salt, heat, or a device that has aged or been damaged. Apple says, “Your Apple Watch is water resistant, but not waterproof,” and notes that “Water resistance isn’t a permanent condition and can diminish over time.” Samsung likewise warns, “Water resistance feature of Galaxy Watch/Fit is not permanent.”
Do not treat “50 m” or a similar rating as permission to dive to that depth. Follow the activities explicitly listed for your model, and avoid water exposure the manufacturer excludes. If the device has been dropped, repaired, opened, or otherwise damaged, do not assume its original water resistance remains intact.

Fit and skin care during exercise
A sensor needs contact with the skin, but a strap should not be painfully tight. Fitbit’s guidance is: “Make sure your band isn’t too tight.” For Fitbit exercise use, the suggested position is 2–3 finger widths above the wrist bone; afterward, move the device lower and loosen it. Clean the band and skin after workouts, then dry them completely.
For an adhesive glucose monitor, prepare the application site as its manufacturer directs. The CDC advises washing hands and the sensor site and letting the site dry completely before application; lotion or moisturized soap can make adhesion difficult. Its general guidance says CGMs typically need replacement every 7 to 14 days, but the specific device’s instructions govern.

After swimming, showering, or sweating
- Rinse only when the manufacturer recommends it, using the specified water type and method. Apple advises a light warm-fresh-water rinse for Series 2 and later after swimming; Samsung says to rinse after swimming.
- Dry the device, band, and skin thoroughly. Do not leave moisture trapped under a strap or sensor.
- Clean off sweat, salt, or pool residue using the device’s care instructions. Avoid assuming that a cleaning method suitable for one model is safe for another.
- For a CGM, the CDC says an extra adhesive patch can protect it while bathing or swimming and help secure it in humid weather. That general advice does not establish compatibility for every patch-and-sensor combination; check both manufacturers’ instructions.
A quick decision checklist
- Identify the exact device model, sensor generation, and band or accessory material.
- Read the current manufacturer instructions for the activity you plan: sweat, shower, pool, ocean, or another water exposure.
- Check restrictions on depth, duration, water movement, soap, salt, chlorine, heat, and device condition.
- Wear the device securely but comfortably, and follow sensor-site preparation instructions for adhesive devices.
- Clean and dry the device and skin afterward; stop wearing it if irritation or discomfort develops.
