For cord-cutters, neither stick is a universal winner. The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) and Roku Streaming Stick Plus (4K, model 3830R) both support 4K and HDR10+. Roku documents more specific remote controls and Bluetooth headphone mode; Amazon specifies Wi-Fi 6. Choose by checking your must-have apps, preferred interface, TV setup, and the exact model—not by assuming one brand is faster or better for everyone.
Which models are being compared?
Names within each product family are easy to mix up, so this comparison is limited to the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen) and the Roku Streaming Stick Plus (4K), model 3830R. The Roku page identifies the Plus as its new 2025 4K streaming device.
Do not assume the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) has the same specifications as the standard 4K model: Amazon lists Wi-Fi 6E and cloud gaming for the Max. Roku also has distinct products: Roku Support identifies the Streaming Stick 4K as model 3820 and Streaming Stick 4K+ as model 3821, separate from the Plus 3830R. Both manufacturers document 4K and HDR10+ support for these specific models. Roku additionally lists HLG; that difference does not establish that its picture is better. Wi-Fi 6 and dual-band Wi-Fi are different published specifications, not proof of which stick will stream faster or more reliably in a particular home.

Which is the better fit for your setup?
Choose the Fire TV Stick 4K if Wi-Fi 6 is a priority
Amazon specifically lists Wi-Fi 6 for the 4K (3rd Gen). That may matter if your router and home network support it, but the specification alone cannot predict real-world streaming quality. Consider Fire TV as well if Alexa and Amazon’s ecosystem are already central to how you use your devices.
Choose the Roku Streaming Stick Plus if its remote or headphone mode suits you
Roku’s product details explicitly list TV power, volume and mute buttons on the voice remote, along with Bluetooth headphone mode. Those are useful differentiators if you want to control basic TV functions from the streaming remote or listen privately with compatible headphones. Verify compatibility for your headphones and setup.

Let app availability and interface preference decide the close call
The inspected product pages do not provide a complete, current app-by-app catalog for every country. Before buying, check that each service you rely on is available in your country on the exact device you plan to purchase. If both cover your services, the interface and ecosystem you prefer may be the deciding factor; the listed specifications do not establish which interface is easier to use.

Will either stick work with your TV?
Roku says the Streaming Stick Plus works with HD TVs up to 1080p as well as compatible 4K TVs. To watch 4K or HDR content, you also need compatible content and TV hardware. Roku specifies an HDMI input that supports HDCP 2.2 for 4K/HDR playback. Check the requirements for your exact television and the Fire TV model as well, rather than assuming every HDMI port supports the necessary formats.

Roku distinguishes the two picture concepts this way: “4K refers to resolution (more pixels for sharper detail), while HDR refers to picture range (brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and wider color).” A 4K-capable stick cannot make a non-4K TV display 4K, and HDR playback depends on compatible content and display support. For installation, check that the TV’s USB port supplies adequate power if you intend to power a stick from it, and that the HDMI port is accessible. Roku says the Plus is designed not to block neighboring HDMI ports, but individual TV layouts vary.

A quick buying checklist
- Confirm the model name and generation on the listing: Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen), not automatically the 4K Max; Roku Streaming Stick Plus (3830R), not the 3820 or 3821.
- Verify that your television and HDMI input support the resolution and HDR formats you want. For Roku 4K/HDR, Roku specifies HDCP 2.2 support.
- Check that your essential streaming services are available for the exact device and your country.
