ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Claude are alternatives to Meta AI for everyday questions, writing, planning and other common tasks. None is established as the best overall choice by the available evidence; the right fit depends on what you do, which apps you already use, your account type and the service’s privacy terms and access limits.
Which alternative fits the way you use an assistant?
Start with your usual tasks and the services you want your assistant to work with. The providers describe overlapping conversational uses, but differ in tools, integrations, account contexts and policies. Feature availability can also depend on region, plan, settings and rollout.

What everyday tasks can each handle?
ChatGPT: a range of conversational and work tools
OpenAI describes ChatGPT for answering and explaining questions, drafting and rewriting, summarizing, translation, creative suggestions and reasoning. Its capabilities overview also lists options such as web search, deep research, image input and generation, file uploads, data analysis, voice, Canvas, memory and projects. Not every tool is available in every plan or configuration. OpenAI says web search can provide current information with citations. Its Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not use or create memories, and are not used to train models; that treatment is specific to Temporary Chats and should not be assumed for ordinary chats. Gemini: useful when Google connections matter
Google says Gemini can work with Connected Apps and, when enabled, use information from some Google services, third-party services, browsers or devices. Which connections and features are available depends on eligibility, permissions and settings. The privacy notice says some features, including Voice Match and Memory, rely on consent. Copilot: distinguish personal assistance from work chat
Microsoft’s personal Copilot information describes help creating documents, presentations and spreadsheets, drafting email, organizing a day and answering questions grounded in work. That page is specifically for people signed in with a personal Microsoft account. Copilot Chat for work and education is a separate context: Microsoft describes it as web-grounded by default, while licensed Microsoft Copilot can also reason over web and work data. Claude: check the exact model and access route
Anthropic’s Covered Models page, dated September 1, 2026, lists Claude Fable 5.1 as generally available in Claude applications and several named cloud platforms; Claude Mythos 5.1 is listed as limited to approved partners. How should you compare privacy and data handling?
Read the policy for the product and account you will actually use. A brand name alone does not tell you what data is collected, how long it is retained or whether an organization’s controls apply.
- Gemini: Google’s notice says prompts, files, images, video, audio and transcripts, generated content, and information from connected apps, browsers and devices may be processed. It says some collected data may be reviewed by human reviewers and advises against submitting confidential information you would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve services. The notice was last updated June 29, 2026, and identifies Google Ireland Limited for the EEA and Switzerland and Google LLC elsewhere. (Google Gemini Apps Privacy Hub)
- Copilot: Microsoft’s cited personal-app notice is limited to personal Microsoft accounts and the updated app; the work and education FAQ describes a different account and product context. - Claude: Anthropic says prompts and completions for the Covered Models listed on its September 1, 2026 page are retained for at least 30 days by default, with exceptions for safety investigations or legal requirements. - ChatGPT: OpenAI’s cited FAQ describes the distinct handling of Temporary Chats, but that does not establish the treatment of ordinary chats. Check current product settings and policy for the mode you use. (OpenAI capabilities overview)
What should you check before switching?
- List your regular tasks. Decide whether you mainly ask questions, write or revise, study, plan, work with files, seek current web information or use voice.
- Match the assistant to your apps. If you want connected services, check which integrations are actually available to your account and what permissions they require.
- Identify your account context. Confirm whether you will use a personal account or an employer- or school-managed account; licenses and administrator settings can change capabilities and protections.
- Review privacy controls and terms. Check what data is collected, whether human review is described, what retention applies to the specific product or model, and what activity or consent controls are available.
- Confirm access where you live. Check current country, language, device, plan and usage limits before relying on a feature; these details can change.
How popular are these assistants?
A July 2026 study by Jennifer Zou surveyed 1,999 US adults who use AI assistants. Its weighted estimates found that 58% named ChatGPT as their primary assistant and 25% named Gemini. These are estimates for that study’s US AI-assistant-user population, weighted using external adoption benchmarks—not global market shares, product-quality scores or evidence that either service is best for a particular person.
