Before you give away or recycle an old Chromebook, save anything you want to keep, check whether it is managed by work or school, and run Powerwash. Powerwash clears locally stored user data, but it does not delete files in Google Drive or erase off-device organization records. Check the Chromebook’s update schedule before offering it to someone else, then confirm the donation or recycling route accepts the device.
1. Save files you want to keep
Back up important files before resetting. In particular, check the Downloads folder: Google says a factory reset erases local user data, including files there. Copy anything you need to Google Drive or another storage location and make sure it is available there before proceeding. Powerwash does not delete files already stored in Google Drive or on external storage. Google’s Chromebook reset instructions explain what the reset removes.
2. Check whether work or school manages the Chromebook
If the Chromebook belongs to an employer or school, contact its administrator before wiping or handing it over. Google says users cannot reset an organization-managed device through the usual process; the administrator must handle the wipe and, if appropriate, re-enrollment. Do not try to remove organizational management yourself.
3. Check its update schedule before donating
A Chromebook may still turn on after its automatic updates end, but update status matters to a recipient. On the device, open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details and find Update schedule. Note the date shown for that specific model. Google’s current guidance says Chromebook models released in 2021 or later receive 10 years of updates; older models may have reached their update deadline. 4. Run Powerwash on a normal, unmanaged Chromebook
- Sign out of the Chromebook.
- Press and hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift + r.
- Select Restart.
- In the window that appears, choose Powerwash, then Continue.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. When the Chromebook returns to its initial setup screen, stop there; do not sign in with your account. The next account used after a reset becomes the owner account, so leave setup for the recipient.
These are Google’s standard Powerwash reset steps. You do not need a USB drive for a routine reset.
5. Understand what Powerwash does—and does not—erase
Google’s technical explanation describes Powerwash as a cryptographic erase: it clears the encryption keys used for locally stored data. That is the intended reset for preparing a Chromebook for another user, but it is not a promise that every trace or copy of information disappears. Google says some diagnostic and operational information, ChromeOS itself, and information about enterprise enrollment may persist. Files in cloud storage and organization records in an Admin console are off-device and are not erased by Powerwash. See Google’s explanation of Powerwash and data erasure.

6. If Powerwash will not run
If the Chromebook cannot complete the normal reset or ChromeOS is damaged, Google documents recovery as an exception. Recovery removes and reinstalls ChromeOS and permanently erases local storage. It requires recovery media on a USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of space. Follow Google’s Chromebook recovery instructions; recovery is not necessary when ordinary Powerwash works.

Donate a usable Chromebook
Ask the intended recipient or charity whether it accepts that model and physical condition; acceptance requirements vary, and there is no universal donation standard. Be clear about visible damage and the update schedule you checked. A device whose automatic updates have ended may not suit every recipient.

Recycle a Chromebook you cannot or do not want to donate
In the United States, Google’s recycling program lists laptops, including Chromebooks, and describes mail-in and local drop-off options. Google advises factory-resetting and clearing data first. Check the program’s current accepted items and available routes before shipping or visiting a location: the linked page is US-specific, and availability can change. See Google’s US recycling program. Outside the United States, check local e-waste guidance or the manufacturer’s recycling instructions.
