These steps can lower exposure, but they cannot guarantee a smoke-free home.
Set up a cleaner-air room
Choose a room that everyone can use comfortably, ideally one with a door that closes; a bedroom with a bathroom can be practical. Shut its windows and doors while keeping a safe exit available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends this focused approach because keeping one room cleaner may be more manageable than trying to treat the entire home.
Plan for heat as well as smoke. Use fans, window air conditioning, or central air conditioning as appropriate. If an air conditioner or HVAC system has a fresh-air intake, close it or select recirculation when the equipment allows. Do not compromise safe ventilation or follow a general instruction over local emergency directions. See the EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance.
Choose filtration for the room or HVAC system
The right option depends on your home’s equipment and the space you need to protect. EPA guidance offers three paths:

| Option | When it fits | Selection and use | Limits |

| Portable air cleaner | A room needs focused filtration, or there is no forced-air system. It can also supplement central filtration. | Choose a unit with a smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. For example, a 150-square-foot room calls for a smoke CADR of at least 100. Choose a CARB-certified unit to limit ozone emissions, and run it continuously at the highest fan speed that is practical. | Coverage is room-specific. Consider noise, unit size, and the cost and availability of replacement filters. |
| Central HVAC filter | The home has a forced-air furnace or air conditioner, and its fan can run often. | Use a MERV 13 or higher filter only if the system can accommodate it. Run the system fan as often as possible and check the filter. | The highest safe rating depends on the system. Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer or an HVAC professional; do not force an incompatible filter. |
| DIY box-fan cleaner | A portable cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable and a temporary alternative is useful. | Use a box fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL safety mark, plus MERV 13 or higher filter(s). Align airflow arrows correctly and seal gaps. | Performance and noise vary with the design, assembly, and maintenance. EPA does not recommend a DIY unit as a permanent replacement for a commercial cleaner. |
The CADR rule is EPA product-selection guidance, not a guarantee of a particular result in every home. Likewise, MERV 13 is a recommendation subject to HVAC compatibility, not a universal instruction to install that rating. Read EPA’s indoor filtration guidance before choosing an approach.
Use a portable air cleaner
Match smoke CADR to the room’s floor area using EPA’s two-thirds rule, and check that the product is CARB-certified to limit ozone emissions. Place and operate the unit according to its manufacturer’s instructions. Keeping it running continuously at the highest tolerable speed supports filtration; a lower speed may be more practical if noise would otherwise prevent continued use.

Check central-filter compatibility first
Before upgrading a furnace or central air-conditioning filter, confirm that the HVAC system can handle the chosen filter. A higher-efficiency filter that is incompatible with the equipment is not a safe upgrade. Ask the system manufacturer or an HVAC professional if you cannot verify the rating. During smoke, run a compatible system fan as often as possible and inspect the filter; EPA’s central-filtration advice explains the recommendation.
Use a DIY cleaner only as a temporary alternative
EPA describes box-fan designs that attach one or more HVAC filters to a fan. Some designs arrange multiple filters around it; a cardboard shroud, thicker filters, and careful sealing can improve performance. Follow the fan and filter instructions, align the airflow arrows, and make a good seal so air does not bypass the filter. Use only a fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL safety mark, and check for dirty filters during a smoke event.

(Please remove the filter’s plastic packaging before installation.)
- 𝐏𝐄𝐓 & 𝐄𝐂𝐎 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬: PET Mode increases airflow to tackle pet hair, dander, and odors, refreshing the air in just 30 minutes. ECO Mode saves energy and extends filter lifespan by entering standby when air quality is excellent, then restarting automatically when purification is required.
- 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬 & 𝐅𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬: Includes Sleep Mode with noise levels as low as 22-24 dB for ultra-quiet nights, Auto Mode for effortless adjustments, and four fan speeds for personalized comfort. Select the setting that suits your needs any time of day.
DIY units are not interchangeable: results depend on the configuration and how well it is assembled and maintained, and dirty filters can undermine performance. EPA’s discussion of DIY cleaner research does not establish one performance figure that applies to every home-built design. EPA prefers a commercial portable cleaner when one is available and affordable. More details are in its DIY air-cleaner guidance.
Reduce particles produced inside the home
Filtration works best when you avoid adding more particles to indoor air. During smoky conditions, avoid smoking or vaping, burning candles or incense, and using a fireplace. Avoid high-temperature cooking—particularly frying or broiling—when possible. Do not vacuum unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter; use a damp cloth or mop to pick up settled dust instead.

Before smoke arrives
If possible, decide which room can serve as the cleaner-air room and obtain compatible filtration supplies ahead of time; supplies may be difficult to find during a smoke event. If you plan to change an HVAC filter rating, verify compatibility with the manufacturer or a technician before installing it.

While outdoor air is smoky
Keep the selected room’s windows and doors closed, preserve a safe exit, and use cooling equipment with outside-air intake closed or recirculation selected when possible. Run room filtration continuously at the highest practical speed and run a compatible central-system fan as often as possible. Check filters and avoid indoor particle sources.
When outdoor air improves
Air out the home when local air-quality information indicates conditions have improved, even temporarily, to clear remaining smoky air. Do not rely on visibility alone to judge whether outdoor air is safe. Follow current local alerts and emergency guidance; the EPA’s smoke-exposure guidance provides additional context.
Who should prioritize a cleaner-air room?
Wildfire smoke may affect some people more than others. EPA identifies people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children, and pregnant people as groups who may be more affected. A cleaner-air room can help reduce exposure, but it does not replace medical advice or local emergency instructions.
