If your washing machine leaves water in the drum or clothes wet at the end of a cycle, start with the drain hose: a kink, blockage, or installation problem is a common check. A clogged pump filter can also restrict drainage on models that have one. Turn the washer off and unplug it before inspecting anything, prepare for hot residual water, and follow the manual for your exact model.
Why won’t your washing machine drain?
The cause may be outside or inside the washer. Check the drainage path in this order, without assuming the pump has failed:
- Kinked or compressed drain hose: A sharp bend, a hose crushed behind the washer, or poor routing can restrict water flow.
- Blocked hose or household drain: A blockage at the hose outlet, siphon connection, standpipe, or sink drain can prevent water from leaving the machine.
- Clogged pump filter: Lint, coins, or other small objects can block a filter on models with a user-accessible one. Not every washer has one.
- Pump obstruction or another internal fault: If the accessible hose and any model-approved filter checks do not resolve the problem, an internal component may need diagnosis.
- Frozen drain hose: LG lists a frozen hose as a possible cause in its drainage guidance.
- Drain installation issue: Hose position or connection can affect drainage. Installation requirements vary by brand and model.
A washer that still will not drain after basic checks needs diagnosis; the symptom alone does not establish that the pump is defective.
How to troubleshoot a washer that will not drain safely
Before starting, turn the washer off and unplug it. Water released from a hose or filter can be hot and may spill quickly. Keep a shallow container and towels ready, and do not force open the door or tip a full washer.

- Check the hose route. Look behind the washer for a sharp kink or compression. If you can reach the hose and its outlet safely, check for an obvious blockage and inspect the accessible connection to the household drain. Use the manual’s instructions for your model before disconnecting anything.
- Check whether the model has a user-serviceable pump filter. Look in the manual rather than opening a panel based on appearance. If the manual describes filter cleaning, use its designated residual-water drain method, put a container and towels underneath, and open the filter slowly. Clean it only as directed by the manufacturer.
- Run a drain or drain-and-spin program only if the manual recommends it. Watch for leaks and stop the cycle if water escapes. A Bosch troubleshooting procedure, for example, calls for a drain-program check after its pump-access steps; that sequence is not universal.
- Arrange service if the problem remains. Stop if the fault returns, the pump makes unusual noises, there is a leak or electrical symptom, or the next step would require removing internal panels. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified appliance servicer.
Check the model before cleaning a pump filter
A removable pump filter is not a universal washer feature. LG provides filter-cleaning instructions for covered models, Whirlpool qualifies its advice as applying to “some models,” and Samsung says its removable pump-filter instructions apply to front-load washers; its top-loaders do not have a removable pump filter. Use the specific model manual to confirm whether a filter is present, where it is, and how to drain residual water before opening it.
Do not buy a generic replacement filter based only on the washer’s brand or the drainage symptom. First confirm that the exact model uses a replaceable filter, then match any part by model number.

Check drain-hose installation against the washer manual
Hose setup requirements differ among products, so do not treat one brand’s measurements as a universal rule. For example, Whirlpool’s front-load guidance says its drain hose should extend no more than 4.5 inches (113 mm) into the drainpipe and that a drain below 30 inches (76.2 cm) can allow water to flow out by gravity. Those are Whirlpool-specific values; consult the installation instructions for your washer before changing hose height or insertion depth.

Use the basic checks only when they are covered by your model’s instructions and can be done without opening internal panels. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified servicer if the hose and any applicable filter checks do not fix the issue, if the washer leaks or makes unusual pump noises, or if you encounter an electrical symptom. Bosch directs owners to support or a servicer when its recommended steps do not help, and GE Appliances describes diagnosis and repair by factory-trained technicians.
