You can use an AI travel assistant while sharing less by starting with broad, non-identifying details and adding only what it needs to answer. A city or region, approximate dates, budget range and interests may be enough for destination ideas or a sample itinerary. Avoid entering passport or payment details, booking references, names and a complete itinerary unless a specific feature genuinely requires them. Privacy controls can help, but they do not make unnecessary disclosures risk-free.
What an AI travel assistant may receive
Your prompt is only one possible source of information. Depending on the service, feature, account and permissions, an assistant may also process uploaded files or images, voice input, device or connected-app context, and location information. For example, Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes prompts and shared content, device and connected-app information, and location data. It says location may be inferred from an IP address or account home and work addresses; precise location may be processed when permission is granted. Details can vary by feature and signed-in status, and location references can also remain in chat text.
That is why a seemingly ordinary request—such as planning a week away—can disclose more than the words you type. An uploaded itinerary, an enabled app integration, or a location permission can add context. The specific data and handling depend on the product and settings in use.
How to plan a trip while sharing less
- Decide what the assistant needs. For destination suggestions or a sample itinerary, try a region, approximate travel window, budget band and interests. Use “late spring” or “about a week” instead of exact dates if exact dates are not needed.
- Ask a generic question first. Request ideas without names, booking details or a full itinerary. Add only the smallest amount of extra context needed to improve the answer.
- Remove identifiers from anything you share. Before pasting or uploading material, check it for passport numbers, payment information, confirmation codes, addresses, phone numbers and names. Redaction reduces exposure but does not guarantee that the remaining text is anonymous.
- Consider what your itinerary reveals. Avoid sharing real-time dates when you will be away from home or your full travel schedule unless the assistant needs that detail for a feature you choose to use.
- Verify important trip details elsewhere. Confirm fares, visa requirements, travel advisories and booking status with the airline, hotel, relevant government authority or other primary provider. Privacy controls do not establish that an assistant’s travel answer is accurate.
Check the service’s data controls before entering sensitive information
Read the assistant’s current privacy notice and settings for the account and feature you plan to use. Look for how it handles prompts, uploads, voice, location and connected apps, and whether behavior differs when signed in or out. Settings and policies can change, so check the live notice rather than assuming one service works like another. The FTC’s January 2024 guidance says companies must honor privacy commitments they make and warns against undisclosed data uses.

Model-improvement settings are not chat deletion
In ChatGPT, OpenAI’s Data Controls page describes a setting called “Improve the model for everyone.” Turning it off means new conversations will not be used to train OpenAI models, but saved chats remain in history. If you want to remove saved conversations, use the separate deletion controls.
Temporary sessions are not a promise of zero retention
OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. The company may retain them for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Check the current setting and its description before using it; the word “temporary” does not mean that no data is processed or retained.

Deletion may involve more than the visible chat
OpenAI’s retention policy says regular and archived chats remain saved until deleted or removed under workspace policy. Deleted chats are removed from the account view and scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to de-identification and legal or security exceptions. Files stored separately in Library may need to be deleted separately. Other providers may have different schedules and exceptions.
Review connected apps, microphone and location access
Connected apps can add third-party data handling
A maps, email or calendar integration may supply context to help answer a question. OpenAI says the context and actions available depend on the app, access granted and workspace controls; information shared with an app is handled under that app’s own terms and privacy policy. For individual plans, information accessed through apps may be used to improve models when the relevant setting is on; business, enterprise and education defaults differ. See OpenAI’s Connected Apps information, then disconnect integrations you do not need. Avoid connecting an account just for convenience if a generic prompt will do.

Use voice and precise location only when useful
If text works, it avoids the need to use a microphone for that request. Review microphone and precise-location permissions in your device settings, and choose a broad location when it is sufficient. For voice features, the FTC recommends checking the service’s policy for how recordings are handled, who may listen and how long audio is stored, as well as looking for settings or physical controls that stop listening. Its guidance is general to voice assistants, so check the specific app and device rather than assuming the same controls apply everywhere.
If you already shared personal travel information
- Use the provider’s activity or chat controls to delete the conversation if you no longer need it.
- Check for separately stored uploads, such as files in a library, and remove those independently if the service requires it.
- Disconnect apps that are no longer needed and review the permissions you granted.
- Read the provider’s retention notice to understand the stated deletion timeline and any legal or security exceptions.
Do not assume that removing a chat from view erases every copy immediately. Deletion schedules, separate storage and exceptions vary by provider.

What to compare when choosing an assistant
There is no basis here for ranking one travel assistant as the most private. The official materials discussed above cover selected information from Google, OpenAI and the FTC, not every travel app or privacy law. Compare services using their current notices and settings, paying attention to these differences:

- What the service receives: prompts, uploads, voice, location, device context and account context.
- Whether conversations may be used for model improvement, and exactly what an opt-out covers.
- What temporary sessions exclude from history or model improvement, and what safety retention remains.
- How chats and uploads are deleted, including files stored in separate libraries or projects.
- Which connected apps can provide context, what access they have and which third-party terms apply.
- Whether behavior changes by signed-in status, plan, workspace administrator, region or device permission.
