To stop a toilet paper roll tree from tipping, preserve a rounded bottom base and the cardboard connections that support its branches. If your tree uses a separate cardboard panel in a roll trunk, make the slots snug; add a small rock inside the roll only if the assembled tree still wobbles.
First, identify which kind of tree you made
There are two common constructions, and each needs a different fix:
- Single-roll cutout: The tube itself is cut into a tree shape and forms its base. The bottom ring and some side connections must remain intact.
- Panel-and-trunk tree: A separate cardboard tree panel fits into slots in a toilet paper roll. Stability depends on the fit between the panel and the roll, with optional ballast inside the trunk.
The instructions for these crafts do not report comparative tipping tests, so neither design can be called more stable based on measured results.
Make a single-roll cutout stand
Keep a bottom section
Do not cut the tree all the way through at the bottom. The remaining cardboard ring gives the tree a standing base. Tutorial examples vary: One Little Project says to draw a bottom ring without specifying a measurement, the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree craft sheet suggests about 1–2 centimeters, and My Crafty Mama uses about 1/2 inch for its project. These are design-specific examples, not a universal measurement or a guarantee that the tree will stand.

Preserve the branch connections
Leave some cardboard connecting the branch tiers. One Little Project recommends keeping at least two branch sections joined, while the Capitol-hosted craft sheet advises leaving the roll connected at the branch tips. If those areas have been cut through, the tree may lose structural support.
Round the base back out after cutting
Cutting a tube that has been flattened can leave its base pinched. Gently push the sides back outward so the bottom is rounded and can rest on the surface. The Capitol-hosted instructions specifically say to fluff the tree into a rounded shape after cutting.

Stabilize a panel fitted into a roll trunk
Check the slot fit
The cardboard panel should sit centered and snugly in the slots cut into the roll. Kitchen Counter Chronicles describes two slots cut about halfway down the sides of the roll; their width depends on the thickness of the panel. If the fit is loose, try adjusting the slots on a scrap roll before altering the finished trunk.
Add optional ballast if it still wobbles
Kitchen Counter Chronicles suggests tucking a rock inside the roll for more stability. A clean pebble you already have is enough to try; there is no specified size or weight, and the tutorial does not report a controlled test. Treat ballast as an optional maker’s tip, not a fix guaranteed to work for every tree.

Troubleshoot a tree that still tips
- For a single-roll tree: Check that the bottom section is still present, that branch tiers remain connected at the sides, and that the tube base is rounded rather than flattened or pinched.
- For a panel-and-trunk tree: Check that the panel is centered and fits snugly in its slots; then try optional ballast inside the roll.
- For either design: Set the tree on a level surface and look for an obvious lean. If the base is warped, damaged, or the tree is unusually top-heavy, the consulted craft instructions do not establish a tested remedy; adding a rock may not resolve it.
Choose a construction that suits your materials
A single-roll cutout uses fewer parts, but depends on leaving its base ring and branch connections intact. A separate panel-and-trunk design creates a joint that must fit well and has room for optional ballast. Choose based on whether you want a one-piece craft or a layered silhouette, the cardboard available, and the height you want—not on a claim that one construction has been proven more stable.

Some toilet paper roll tree instructions include punching a hole near the top and attaching ribbon or string. That makes the craft a hanging decoration, not a freestanding tree; use that option if you do not need it to stand on a surface.
