That gives you room for everyday multitasking and a useful amount of local storage. If you mainly browse, stream, and save files in the cloud, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD may be enough. Gaming, creative projects, and large file libraries can call for more.
The screen size does not determine how much memory or storage you need. Your workload and how much you keep on the laptop do.
What RAM and storage do in a laptop
RAM holds the information your laptop needs while programs are running. More RAM can help when you keep many applications or browser tabs open, or use demanding software. Storage holds Windows, applications, games, and files. A larger SSD gives you more room to keep items on the laptop, including when you are offline.
They are separate capacities: extra storage does not compensate for too little RAM, and extra RAM does not provide more room for files.

Recommended RAM and SSD storage by use

Is 8 GB of RAM enough?
It can be enough for browsing, email, documents, and streaming, especially if you do not run many demanding applications at once. Microsoft lists 8–16 GB as its general recommendation and separately says 8 GB is recommended for longer-term use. If you often multitask or want more headroom, choose 16 GB when possible. Windows 11’s minimum requirement is 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, but those figures are eligibility thresholds for the operating system—not comfortable purchase targets for a general-purpose laptop. Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements

How much SSD storage do you need?
Choose storage based on what you keep locally. Microsoft’s buying guide gives 128–256 GB as a range for cloud-oriented users and 512 GB–1 TB for people saving many photos, videos, and documents on the PC. A 512 GB SSD is a practical middle ground if you keep some files, applications, and downloads on the laptop. Microsoft’s Windows laptop buying guide
- Mostly cloud-based: 256 GB may work if you regularly use online storage and keep few large files offline.
- Mixed local and cloud use: 512 GB leaves more room for applications, downloads, and personal files.
- Large games or creative projects: consider 1 TB or more if you want multiple large titles or project libraries available locally.
Cloud storage can reduce how much you need on the internal drive, but it does not give you the same offline access as files stored locally. A portable external SSD can supplement an internal drive for archives; it does not increase the laptop’s built-in capacity.

What to check before buying
- Application and game requirements: check the published RAM and storage requirements for the software you plan to run. Needs differ between titles and versions.
- Upgradeability: RAM may be soldered or otherwise non-upgradeable, and supported memory types and maximum capacities vary by model. Consult the exact laptop’s manual or manufacturer support page before buying a machine or parts. Microsoft Support’s memory guidance
