Choose PlayStation Plus if you mainly play on PlayStation; choose Xbox Game Pass if you want one subscription spanning Xbox and PC, or you value day-one releases on supported plans. The right tier depends on the games you want, your devices, and whether you will use extras such as cloud play or classic games. Compare current checkout prices for your region before subscribing: Sony lists U.S. prices, but Xbox’s U.S. plan page did not display verifiable numeric prices on October 4, 2026.

How to choose between PS Plus and Game Pass

  1. Start with your device. PS Plus is built around PlayStation. Game Pass has console and PC plans, plus supported-device access on eligible tiers. If you play only on PC, compare PC Game Pass directly with the PlayStation options available to you.
  2. Check the games you actually want. Browse each service’s current catalog for specific titles, then consider whether you are comfortable with games leaving. A larger headline catalog does not guarantee that it includes the games you will play.
  3. Decide whether day-one access matters. Xbox Ultimate and PC Game Pass list new games on day one. Xbox Premium lists selected Xbox-published titles within one year of launch. PS Plus tiers offer monthly games and a rotating catalog, not a general promise of day-one PlayStation Studios releases.
  4. Price the right billing period. Compare the same subscription length, your local checkout price and taxes, and any offer available to your account. Both services renew unless you cancel or switch off recurring billing.

What each service includes

The figures below are plan specifications on the services’ U.S. pages accessed October 4, 2026. Catalog counts and features can change, and availability may differ by region, platform and plan.

Service and plan What stands out Cloud and access notes
PS Plus Essential Monthly games, online multiplayer, PlayStation Store discounts, Share Play, cloud storage and exclusive content. Monthly games are playable while membership is active.
PS Plus Extra Essential benefits, a rotating Game Catalog described by Sony as hundreds of games, and Ubisoft+ Classics. Members can download catalog titles. Sony says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026.
PS Plus Premium Lower-tier benefits, Classics Catalog, selected game trials, cloud streaming and Sony Pictures Catalog. Streaming is available only in supported territories and varies by title and feature. Sony specifies at least 5 Mbps, or 15 Mbps for 1080p. The FAQ identifies PS4, PS5 and PC streaming. Classic PS3 games are streaming-only; most other titles can be downloaded. PS5 games require a PS5 for download.
Game Pass Essential 50+ games, in-game benefits and online console multiplayer. The plan FAQ says it does not include new releases on day one. Xbox lists 5 cloud-play hours per month.
Game Pass Premium 200+ games across console, PC and supported devices; selected Xbox-published games arrive within one year of launch. Xbox lists 10 cloud-play hours per month, in-game benefits and online console multiplayer.
Game Pass Ultimate 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices; new games on day one; EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics. Xbox lists 15 cloud-play hours per month, in-game benefits and online console multiplayer.
PC Game Pass 300+ games, new games on day one, EA Play and in-game benefits. PC-only; Xbox’s page says monthly cloud limits are not included with this plan.

Catalog totals and cloud-hour allowances are service specifications, not independent measurements. Xbox says titles, counts, features and availability vary over time, by region, plan and platform. A subscription gives access only while it remains active and a game stays in the library; it does not mean you own every listed game.

Where PS Plus is the better fit

Essential for monthly games and PlayStation online features

Essential is the entry point if you want monthly games and PlayStation online multiplayer, alongside discounts, Share Play, cloud storage and exclusive content. Sony’s U.S. page displayed prices of $10.99 per month, $27.99 for three months or $79.99 for 12 months. Membership continues until canceled.

Extra for a rotating PlayStation catalog

Extra adds the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics to Essential. It suits players who want a broader set of downloadable PS4 and PS5 games without specifically needing Premium’s classics, trials or streaming features. Sony displayed U.S. prices of $16.99 per month, $43.99 for three months or $134.99 for 12 months. Catalog titles can leave the service.

Premium for classics, trials and streaming

Premium is the relevant tier if you want the Classics Catalog, selected game trials or PlayStation cloud streaming. Sony displayed U.S. prices of $19.99 per month, $54.99 for three months or $159.99 for 12 months. Premium is not available in every territory, and Sony excludes some overseas territories from the listed streaming benefit. Check local eligibility and title support before paying specifically for streaming.

Where Xbox Game Pass is the better fit

For players who use both Xbox and PC

Game Pass plans make more sense when you want access across Xbox and PC, or supported devices, rather than tying the subscription to a PlayStation console. Which devices and games are supported depends on the plan and title, so verify the specific game before subscribing.

For day-one releases

Xbox lists day-one new games with Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Premium instead offers selected Xbox-published titles within one year of launch; Essential does not include new releases on day one, according to the plan FAQ. These distinctions matter more than the overall catalog count if you subscribe chiefly to play new releases.

For bundled extras or cloud play

Ultimate is the Xbox tier with the broadest listed bundle: EA Play, Fortnite Crew, Ubisoft+ Classics and 15 cloud-play hours per month, in addition to its game catalog. Essential and Premium list 5 and 10 monthly cloud-play hours respectively. These are monthly allowances, not unlimited playtime. PC Game Pass lists no monthly cloud limit because cloud limits are not included with that plan.

What the subscriptions cost in the U.S.

Sony’s U.S. plan page displayed the following prices on October 4, 2026. They are shown by billing interval, not converted into an assumed annual equivalent.

Extra $16.99 $43.99 $134.99
Premium $19.99 $54.99 $159.99

Xbox’s U.S. page showed price placeholders rather than usable numeric prices when accessed October 4, 2026, so a current Xbox price cannot be reliably stated here. Check the price shown for your account at checkout and compare it with the same billing period for PS Plus. Regional taxes, offers and account-specific terms can affect what you pay; do not rely on older prices to declare one service cheaper.

Cloud play, game access and renewal details

Cloud streaming is conditional

For PS Plus Premium, streaming depends on supported territory, device, title and feature; Sony’s stated connection guidance is at least 5 Mbps or 15 Mbps for 1080p. Xbox’s listed cloud hours are 5 per month for Essential, 10 for Premium and 15 for Ultimate. Check your device, region, network and the individual game’s availability before treating cloud access as a substitute for a console or download.

Catalog access is temporary

Monthly PS Plus games remain playable while membership is active. Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles can leave, as can games in Game Pass. If a specific game is the reason you subscribe, check its current listing and any departure notice; subscription access is not permanent ownership.

Turn off renewal if you only need a short-term subscription

Sony says memberships continue until canceled. Xbox says recurring billing is on by default and can be switched off through a Microsoft account or console. Review the renewal date and cancellation controls for the account you use before starting a subscription intended for a limited period.
