For everyday tasks such as documents, browsing, communication, and study, start with a MacBook Air. Choose the 13-inch Air if portability matters most or the 15-inch model if you want more built-in screen space. Consider a MacBook Pro when its larger display or higher chip tier matches your software and workload needs. These are selection guidelines, not benchmark-based performance rankings: Apple’s comparison page lists models and specifications but does not establish which one is fastest for a particular professional app.
Which MacBooks are in Apple’s current lineup?
As listed on Apple’s Mac model comparison page, the current laptop families include MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro. The page also retains older models for comparison, so check the generation carefully if you are considering a used or discounted MacBook.
| Family and size | Chip options listed | Published display size | Display type |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Neo | A18 Pro | 13.0 inches | Not stated in the cited comparison material |
| MacBook Air, 13-inch | M5 | 13.6 inches | Liquid Retina |
| MacBook Air, 15-inch | M5 | 15.3 inches | Liquid Retina |
| MacBook Pro, 14-inch | M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max | 14.2 inches | Liquid Retina XDR |
| MacBook Pro, 16-inch | M5 Pro or M5 Max | 16.2 inches | Liquid Retina XDR |
These are the model and display distinctions Apple lists on its comparison page, accessed October 4, 2026. The names “13-inch,” “15-inch,” “14-inch,” and “16-inch” are product-size labels; the published display measurements are shown separately above.
Start with the work and software you need to run
Everyday work, browsing, and study
For documents, web browsing, email and messaging, and study, the Air is the straightforward starting point. Move to another family only if a specific requirement—such as the display size, software, or workload—justifies it.

Creative, development, and compute-heavy work
List the applications you rely on and identify whether they involve sustained creative work, software development, or other compute-heavy tasks. Then compare the chip tiers available in the models you are considering. Apple’s comparison page confirms the chip families in the lineup, but the material cited here does not quantify application performance or show that a particular tier wins for a given task. Check requirements and credible app-specific testing before paying more on the assumption that a higher tier will make your workflow faster.
Choose a screen size that fits how you work and travel
The Air comes in 13.6- and 15.3-inch display sizes; the Pro comes in 14.2- and 16.2-inch sizes. If you carry your laptop regularly, compare the smaller option in the family you are considering. If you often want more working area on the built-in screen, compare the larger one. These are practical trade-offs, not claims about weight or measured productivity.

Apple identifies the Air displays as Liquid Retina and the listed Pro displays as Liquid Retina XDR. Treat the display type as a specification to compare against your needs; it does not by itself establish which MacBook is right for your work.
Match memory and storage to your actual needs
Think through your normal multitasking, the applications you keep open, and how many local files you need to store. Check the available memory and storage choices for the exact model and region you plan to buy. There is no single capacity recommendation here that fits every reader, and a configuration shown for one MacBook should not be assumed to be available for another.

Check compatibility before settling on a configuration
- Applications: Confirm that the software you depend on supports the Mac and configuration you intend to buy.
- Peripherals: Compare the exact model’s current technical specifications with your monitors, storage devices, and other accessories.
- External displays: Verify the model’s display support and limits against your planned setup rather than assuming every MacBook supports the same arrangement.
The comparison page establishes the lineup and model distinctions, but it does not settle every port or external-display limit. Check Apple’s current technical specifications for the specific model before ordering.
