Neither the MacBook Air nor Windows laptops are the universal winner. Choose the Air if its macOS environment and Apple ecosystem suit you; choose a Windows laptop if you depend on Windows software or need a particular configuration, form factor, or price. The comparison that matters is between specific models—not one Apple laptop and an entire category.
Start with the software and devices you need
Before weighing battery life or screen quality, check whether your required applications and peripherals work on the exact laptop you are considering. If a work, school, or specialist app requires Windows, that can settle the choice. If the apps you rely on support macOS and you prefer Apple’s environment, the MacBook Air may fit better.
Compatibility can also vary within the Windows category. RTINGS flags potential application compatibility concerns for the Snapdragon Windows systems in its tested comparison; that finding should not be applied to every Windows laptop. Check the app maker’s support information and confirm that essential peripherals work with the specific model and processor you plan to buy.
Know what you are comparing
“Windows laptop” describes a broad range of computers from different manufacturers, not a single competing product. Screen size, processor, memory, storage, ports, and form factor can differ substantially. A comparison with one Surface Laptop cannot establish how all Windows laptops perform, or what they cost.

For an initial shortlist, Apple’s MacBook Air specifications list the features and configurations Apple offers. On the Windows side, choose a candidate that matches your actual needs—such as a conventional clamshell, touchscreen, convertible, gaming model, or work laptop. Dell Inspiron 14 Plus is one example of a Windows 11 alternative noted in a buying guide, not a stand-in for the entire category.
Where one named comparison favors each laptop
Some reviews offer useful, concrete tradeoffs, but their conclusions apply to the particular devices tested. In its comparison of the 15-inch Surface Laptop 7th Edition and 13-inch MacBook Air with M4, RTINGS reports that the Surface has a brighter 120Hz display and a wider port selection, while the Air has a larger touchpad and better-sounding speakers. The difference in screen size matters too: these are not identical-size laptops.

Those findings can help if these are your two candidates, but they do not establish that Windows laptops generally have better screens or ports, or that MacBook Air models always have better touchpads or speakers. Compare the exact configurations you would buy.
Read battery results as test results, not guarantees
Battery runtime depends on the particular machine and how it is used. In RTINGS’ general-productivity test, its tested 15-inch Surface Laptop 7th Edition lasted almost 18 hours on one charge, compared with about 12 hours for its tested 15-inch MacBook Air M4. RTINGS’ page was updated August 11, 2026; these are results for those models under that test, not a prediction for every Windows laptop or MacBook Air.

Other reviews use different methods. TechRadar’s review search excerpt reports 15.5 hours of web-surfing battery life for an M5 MacBook Air, but the reviewed excerpt does not establish the review year or enough test detail to compare that result directly with RTINGS’ productivity test. Treat any runtime figure as a test-specific point of reference, not a promise for your workload.
Principled Technologies also published a comparative report in May 2025 testing specified Copilot+ PCs and Apple MacBooks under its stated conditions. Its results concern those tested machines and methods. They should not be read as a platform-wide battery ranking.

Compare configurations and local prices before judging value
A fair value comparison needs your country, budget, and current prices for configurations that meet the same needs. Match useful memory and storage, screen size and quality, relevant ports, and warranty coverage. An entry configuration on one side may not be equivalent to a more capable configuration on the other.
Because no target country, budget, or specific Windows model is defined here, there is no sound basis for declaring either choice cheaper or better value. Check current local prices for the models and configurations on your shortlist.

Use your priorities to make the call
- Choose a MacBook Air if your essential applications and peripherals work with macOS and you prefer Apple’s platform and ecosystem. Use Apple’s specifications page to check the available model and configuration.
- Choose a Windows laptop if you need Windows software or a specific Windows configuration or form factor. Verify support for your apps and accessories, especially if you are considering a Snapdragon system.
- Compare two named models directly if screen, battery, sound, touchpad, or ports will decide the purchase. Look for results from the same workload and a clearly stated test, and keep each review’s findings tied to its tested devices.
Once compatibility is settled, shortlist models by the screen size, portability, ports, and workload you care about. Then compare like-for-like configurations and the evidence for those exact models.
