That release-order route is the clearest way into the main action series. Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is an optional spin-off about a younger Cereza, with exploration and puzzles rather than the main games’ style of action.
Recommended Bayonetta play order
- Bayonetta
- Bayonetta 2
- Bayonetta 3
This is a practical recommendation based on the series’ release history and relationships, not an order mandated by Nintendo or PlatinumGames. Starting at the beginning lets you encounter the mainline games in the order they were published.

Where Bayonetta Origins fits
Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon focuses on young Cereza and Cheshire. It is a separate, optional origins adventure, not a substitute for the three main action entries. Nintendo’s 17 March 2023 announcement describes it as offering a “very different style of gameplay,” and the game emphasizes exploration and puzzle-solving. Choose it first if that storybook-like approach is what interests you most; choose Bayonetta first if you want the main series.
Which platforms have the Bayonetta games?
The first game has the broadest platform availability among the entries covered here. The official listings reviewed show PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo platforms for Bayonetta, while the later mainline entries and Origins are listed for Nintendo Switch. Platform catalogs and stock can vary by country and may change.

Choose based on your story and hardware
- You want the main story: Begin with Bayonetta, then continue with Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3.
- You are most interested in young Cereza: You can start with Bayonetta Origins, but expect an origins adventure with a different gameplay style, not the mainline action format.
- You own a Switch: Nintendo lists Switch editions of all four games discussed here, making it the most straightforward single platform for these entries.
- You own a PC, PS4, or Xbox One but not a Switch: The official storefronts reviewed list the original Bayonetta for those platforms. Those listings do not provide a route to the later entries.
Digital and physical editions: what to check
Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShop purchases ended on 27 March 2023. Nintendo’s Bayonetta Wii U page gives an earlier, title-specific cutoff for Wii U purchases of Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 in 2019. Do not count on buying those games digitally through the Wii U eShop. These notices do not establish whether secondhand physical copies are available.
Store listings are regional: a game or edition listed in one country may not be listed or in stock in another. Nintendo Canada confirms a physical Switch edition of Bayonetta Origins, but check your local Nintendo store or retailer for current stock and edition details. The listings cited here do not establish universal availability or current prices.
