December 2 was GivingTuesday in 2025. In 2026, it falls on December 1. The annual day moves with the calendar, so always check the year before planning around a date. GivingTuesday is a worldwide generosity movement—not just a day for donating money—and people can participate by giving time, skills, goods, money, or their voice.
What is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday is an annual focal point for generosity and community action. It is not limited to financial donations: people can volunteer, share skills, donate goods, speak up for a cause, help a neighbor, or take part in another act of kindness.
There is no required platform or participation fee. GivingTuesday does not collect donations and distribute them to organizations. Its FAQ also notes that it does not maintain a comprehensive list of participating nonprofits.
What can you give?
Choose an action that fits your circumstances and the needs of a cause or community you care about. GivingTuesday’s guidance invites people to ask, “What can I give?” and “How can I help?”

- Money: Give through the organization’s own donation channel, and check the recipient and any platform terms before paying.
- Time: Volunteer with a local group or community effort, following its instructions.
- Skills: Offer relevant expertise or practical help to a group that can use it.
- Goods: Donate items requested by a recipient or community organization.
- Your voice: Share information, advocate for a cause, or encourage others to take part.
- Kindness: Help someone directly or join a community action.
Tax treatment depends on the recipient and the rules where you live. A gift is not automatically tax-deductible. GivingTuesday’s FAQ advises U.S. groups that are not registered nonprofits to make clear when contributions are not tax-deductible; people fundraising elsewhere should follow local rules.
How to take part as an individual
- Choose a cause or local group. Think about an issue or community you want to support.
- Decide what you can offer. Select money, time, skills, goods, advocacy, or another useful action.
- Follow the recipient’s instructions. For a financial gift, use the organization’s own donation channel and review any stated fees and tax information.
- Invite others if appropriate. Share the specific action or activity so people know how they can help.
How nonprofits and community organizers can participate
GivingTuesday’s official guidance does not require formal registration or a particular fundraising platform. Organizers can use their existing website, campaign page, or social channels. A simple plan helps supporters understand what to do and how their participation contributes.

Participation itself is free, but a digital fundraising provider may charge fees under its own terms. Check those terms separately rather than assuming that every donation platform is free.
