Why a TASER is not appropriate for children
A TASER is a conducted energy device; a stun gun is a related but distinct kind of electronic weapon. Neither should be treated as a child-appropriate safety product. The child-specific medical assessment cited here concerns the TASER 10, not every model.
The UK Scientific Advisory Committee on the Medical Implications of Less-Lethal Weapons (SACMILL) says younger children’s less mature anatomy may make them more susceptible to discharge and probe injuries. Its assessment identifies several concerns:
- Probe injuries: SACMILL says a younger child’s thinner body wall may leave underlying tissues and organs, including the heart, more exposed to injury from skin-perforating probes.
- Head injuries: The committee says a thinner skull may increase the potential for injury to the brain and surrounding tissue. A smaller child’s head and neck are also closer to vulnerable areas.
- Falls: A discharge can be followed by a fall, which may cause fractures or other injuries. SACMILL identifies this as a concern for children as well.
These are qualitative medical cautions, not a quantified estimate of how likely an injury is. SACMILL’s statement does not establish a numerical child-specific risk or justify applying its TASER 10 assessment to all device models. Can a child legally possess a Taser?
There is no single answer for every reader: restrictions depend on the jurisdiction, and local rules may also cover schools or other specific places. These two US examples show why the location matters; neither determines the law elsewhere.

What the child-and-policing evidence does—and does not—say
A device carried by an authority figure can affect children even when it is not fired. In its 2021 review, the UK Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) reported that children told the Children’s Rights Alliance for England the threat of violence from police carrying a Taser was “really frightening.” The review also recorded calls for a strong presumption against using Tasers on children. In the United States, the National Institute of Justice’s 2019 discussion describes law-enforcement policies increasingly requiring an immediate threat of physical harm before a conducted energy device is used, and a move away from using such devices to control people solely for fleeing or resisting. It also discusses concerns about improper deployment. Those agency policies concern police use; they do not make a device suitable for a child or establish civilian possession law. What parents can do instead
If the question comes from a safety concern, start by identifying the situation—such as a route to school, a conflict, or an immediate threat—and involve a trusted adult, school staff, or local authorities as appropriate.
