Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) Bluetooth chips combine radio-frequency (RF) circuitry with baseband logic in different ways, depending on the model. Qualcomm describes the CSR8510 as a single-chip radio and baseband IC for PCs and consumer electronics; other CSR parts add an MCU, Bluetooth stack, memory, application processing, or audio features. The right part therefore depends on its Bluetooth mode, target product, interfaces, package, and lifecycle—not simply the CSR name.
What does “integrated radio/baseband” mean?
The radio handles wireless transmission and reception: it converts signals between the chip’s digital circuitry and radio-frequency signals sent over the air. The baseband handles lower-level Bluetooth link operations and data processing. Putting both on one IC can reduce the number of separate components a design needs, but it does not mean every chip in the CSR family has the same functions or is a complete, ready-to-use Bluetooth product.
Qualcomm calls the CSR8510 a “Bluetooth v4.0 single-chip radio and baseband IC” for PCs and consumer electronics. That wording describes the CSR8510 specifically, not every CSR Bluetooth chip. Some models integrate considerably more than radio and baseband; others target different Bluetooth modes and applications.
How CSR Bluetooth models differ
These examples show why the model number matters. The listed features are vendor descriptions, not a complete comparison of every part in the CSR catalog.

What RF and baseband functions may be integrated?
RF circuitry
Radio integration can include important analog and RF components, not just a connection to an external radio. The CSR1011 datasheet lists an on-chip balun and fully integrated synthesizer. The CSR1013 datasheet describes a near-zero-IF receiver, integrated synthesizer and balun, and an internal power amplifier. Those are model-specific design details, not family-wide guarantees.
Baseband processing
The CSR1013 datasheet lists hardware support for cyclic redundancy checks (CRC), encryption, data whitening, and access-code correlation. Such hardware can handle common link-layer work without requiring the host processor to perform every operation in software.
Published radio figures
For the CSR1011, the Cambridge Silicon Radio datasheet lists transmitter output of 9 dBm and receiver sensitivity of −93 dBm. For the CSR1013, its 2015 WLCSP datasheet lists 9.0 dBm internal power-amplifier output. These are vendor specifications for named models, not independent test results or values that can be applied to other CSR chips.

How to choose or identify a CSR Bluetooth chip
For a new board or a repair, begin with the exact model marking and the intended role of the chip. A CSR8510 intended for a PC peripheral is not interchangeable with a BLE MCU platform or an automotive or audio device just because each is associated with Bluetooth.

- Bluetooth mode and version: Establish whether the product needs Classic Bluetooth (BR/EDR), BLE, or both, and check the specific version documented for the part.
- Intended application: Match the chip to its documented target, such as a PC peripheral, low-power BLE device, automotive system, or audio product.
- Integration: Determine whether the IC provides only radio and baseband or also an MCU, stack, application resources, memory, or audio DSP.
- Board compatibility: Confirm the exact package, pinout, host interface, power requirements, and software support against the datasheet for that model and revision. The cited CSR8510 page, for example, lists USB 2.0 and a 6 × 6 × 0.9 mm QFN package.
- RF requirements: Compare receiver sensitivity, transmit output, antenna arrangement, and RF components only where the relevant datasheet publishes those values.
- Lifecycle and sourcing: Check current supplier and lifecycle documentation for the exact part. The consulted pages do not settle current availability for every model.
If you are trying to find a pinout for a chip on an existing board, the model marking and package are essential. Use the matching datasheet rather than a pinout for a similar-looking CSR part; the CSR1011 and CSR1013 datasheets describe distinct parts and packages.

CSR8510 is a plausible chipset to encounter when looking into Bluetooth USB adapters because Qualcomm documents it for PCs and consumer electronics and lists USB 2.0. However, that does not verify that a particular retail adapter contains a CSR8510. Listings may not establish the chip fitted to a specific unit, so check a seller’s model-level documentation and operating-system compatibility rather than assuming the chipset from the product category alone.

Lifecycle and specification limits
Qualcomm marks the CSR8670 “Not Recommended For New Designs.” That status is a reason to investigate alternatives and supply carefully before a new design-in; it does not by itself establish whether remaining stock is available. The consulted official pages and datasheets cover representative models, not a complete current catalog or live inventory. Confirm the latest datasheet revision and supplier lifecycle information for the exact part before committing a design or buying a replacement.
