IPC-9592B is the latest revision shown in IPC’s revision table, which marks IPC-9592 “No Longer Maintained.” Its documented updates affect evaluation and component derating for power conversion devices (PCDs), including certain DC-to-DC converter modules. For engineering and procurement teams, the practical step is to identify the contractually applicable revision and translate it into clear design, supplier-evidence, and purchase-document requirements—not to assume that a newer enhancement has been issued.
What IPC-9592 covers
IPC describes the standard as covering power conversion devices for the computer and telecommunications industries. PCDs include AC-to-DC and DC-to-DC modules, converters, and power supplies. IPC-9592 addresses their design, qualification testing, conformance testing, and manufacturing quality and reliability processes; it does not define the functional requirements of the equipment that uses the PCD. (IPC-9592B table of contents)
The standard’s scope includes mechanical and electrical characteristics, environmental conditions, quality and reliability, and regulatory parameters. It provides a framework for documenting a PCD’s electrical interface, physical configuration and cooling, operating and shipping environment, qualification approach, manufacturing conformance, and relevant safety, EMI, and environmental requirements. The framework does not by itself establish that a particular product has been tested or that compliance guarantees field reliability.
Which revision applies now?
IPC’s revision table lists IPC-9592 as “No Longer Maintained*” and shows revision B (January 2013), revision A (May 2010), and the original issue (September 2008). The IPC-9592B document is dated November 2012. The available revision history therefore supports discussion of documented changes through B, not a claim that IPC has recently issued new enhancements. Check with IPC and the customer before specifying the standard, especially where a contract or customer requirement names a revision. (IPC revision table)

What changed in IPC-9592B?
More definitive preconditioning for certain modules
The ANSI Webstore description says revision B added more definitive preconditioning tests for surface-mount PCD modules used for category 2 devices, identified as DC-to-DC converters. This is a focused change; it should not be read as a statement that every DC-to-DC converter requires the same test profile regardless of application. (ANSI Webstore: IPC-9592B)
Updated performance evaluations and derating guidance
The IPC-affiliated store’s revision description reports updates to performance evaluations, including thermal and vibration; temperature, humidity and bias; temperature cycling; shock and vibration; random vibration; and free-fall drop and shock tests. It also says nearly all device component derating guidance was updated, naming capacitors, resistors, diodes, transistors, transformers, inductors, microcircuits, circuit breakers, fuses, relays, switches, and oscillators. These are the store’s summary of B’s changes, not a substitute for the licensed standard or proof that every listed component received a new requirement. (IPC Store: IPC-9592B)
Keep revision A changes separate
Revision A’s changes are distinct from B’s. ANSI’s catalog says A expanded moisture sensitivity level coverage, addressed corrosion in commercial, manufacturing, and uncontrolled external environments, and expanded discussion and application of highly accelerated life testing (HALT). (ANSI Webstore: IPC-9592A)
What the changes mean for power-supply design
For a design team, IPC-9592 can help structure a review of the converter or supply’s interface, packaging and cooling, intended environment, reliability assurance, qualification tests, and manufacturing controls. Use the applicable licensed revision alongside the customer’s specification: the revision summaries establish that environmental evaluations and derating guidance changed, but do not expose the complete limits, test profiles, or acceptance criteria.

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Compare component and package choices with the applicable derating guidance and the product’s actual operating conditions.
- Define the environmental conditions the PCD must withstand, including relevant temperature, humidity, shock, and vibration conditions.
- Document qualification and manufacturing-conformance expectations, including any customer-specific requirements that go beyond the standard.
- Record deviations explicitly rather than treating a general claim of “IPC-9592 compliant” as proof that every application-specific requirement is met.
What procurement should put in the purchase documents
IPC-9592B states this order of precedence for purchases using the standard when requirements conflict:
- Purchase order
- Master drawing
- IPC-9592B
- Applicable documents identified in Section 2
Because the purchase order and master drawing rank ahead of the standard in this stated order, put customer-specific requirements, the intended revision, and any deviations in the controlling purchase documents. Do not assume that citing IPC-9592 alone resolves conflicting requirements.

The standard says customer-defined supplier PCD certifications are intended to ship with first article and design changes when requested by the user. Procurement and supplier-quality teams can turn that into a clear evidence request. In addition to the certification when applicable and requested, ask the supplier to identify the revision used, provide relevant qualification and conformance reports, list deviations, and supply change-related evidence. The latter items are a practical recommendation for evaluating a proposal, not a verbatim mandatory checklist from the cited standard excerpt.

Use the customer’s requirements and contractual purchase documents as the acceptance basis. A useful comparison should cover:
- Input and output electrical limits and interface requirements.
- Mechanical form, mounting, and cooling approach.
- Environmental suitability, including applicable temperature, humidity, shock, and vibration conditions.
- Qualification and manufacturing-conformance evidence.
- Quality and reliability processes, regulatory fit, and declared deviations.
The standard provides a useful scope for organizing those questions; it does not establish that a particular proposal passes them. Obtain the licensed revision to verify specific limits and acceptance criteria.
Where to verify the detailed requirements
IPC’s public table of contents gives the standard’s scope, while the ANSI Webstore lists IPC-9592B for purchase. The revision summaries from ANSI and the IPC-affiliated store are useful for identifying the areas changed, but they do not provide the full test requirements. Confirm the applicable contractual revision with IPC or the customer, then consult the licensed document before setting design limits, test plans, or supplier acceptance criteria.
