NHL teams do not follow one league-wide goalie rotation. The head coach chooses the starter, usually with input from the goalie coach, weighing rest, workload, availability, the matchup, recent performance, the strength of the goalie tandem and the backup’s game readiness. Teams commonly split back-to-back games, but who plays each night depends on the situation.

Who decides which goalie starts?

The head coach makes the starting-goalie decision, with the goalie coach contributing specialized advice on preparation, performance and development. The NHL rulebook addresses which eligible players a team submits after warmups; it does not prescribe a rotation or a formula for choosing a starter. NHL.com’s account of goalie coaches describes the head coach’s responsibility, while the NHL rulebook covers lineup submission rather than a start-selection policy.

What factors shape the choice?

Rest, schedule and travel

A back-to-back presents a practical choice: use a rested goalie for the second game, or keep the same goalie in net if the staff believes that is the stronger option. Teams often split the starts. Seattle’s explanation of the approach says the order can depend on the opponent and on how long each goalie has been rested. Kraken head coach Dave Hakstol described a split as typical, not mandatory.

Recovery planning can extend beyond assigning one game to each goalie. NHL.com has reported teams using a third goalie so a planned starter can skip dressing on selected nights. Avoiding warmups and remaining ready as the backup can provide a fuller physical and mental break; in some situations, a team may also use the arrangement to avoid travel before the planned start. NHL.com’s workload report describes these team-specific practices.

Season workload and practice demands

Coaches consider more than how many games a goalie has played. Practice volume matters too: NHL.com describes goalies doing specialized work with a goalie coach and leaving the ice before higher-volume team drills. Having another goalie available can give a club more ways to cover practice work while limiting unnecessary saves or butterfly drops for a planned starter. Teams manage these demands individually; the cited reporting does not establish a league-wide number of starts, shots or practice repetitions that automatically triggers a rest day.

How strong the goalie pairing is

A balanced tandem gives a coach more flexibility to share starts. If one goalie is clearly the stronger option, the team may lean more heavily on that player while still accounting for schedule and recovery. The Kraken’s explanation presents this as a trade-off between the second goalie’s quality and the possible cost of using one goalie on consecutive nights—not as a rule that every team applies the same way.

Recent play and availability

There is no universal rule that a goalie must start again after a win or lose the job after one poor outing. A coach may weigh recent performance, but injuries, return-to-play status and roster decisions can override the intended rotation. The available NHL.com reporting on backup roles describes varying opportunities and long waits between starts rather than a standard performance-based trigger.

Backup readiness

The backup has to be ready when called on, even if games are far apart. Long gaps can disrupt timing and confidence, so goalie coaches may balance regular practice duties with game-like drills. Winnipeg Jets goalie Eric Comrie told NHL.com, “The hardest part is definitely finding that game rhythm.” A coach therefore weighs the starter’s workload against the backup’s readiness for the assignment. NHL.com’s report on backup preparation discusses that challenge.

How back-to-back decisions work

For two games on consecutive days, the staff chooses whether to split the starts and, if so, which goalie plays each night. The first-night choice can depend on the opponent, recent rest and the team’s view of the two goalies’ relative ability. If the team favors one goalie strongly enough, it may use that goalie both nights; the schedule alone does not dictate a switch.

One often-cited estimate needs careful context. Seattle’s article summarizes a 2013 analysis by Eric Tulsky that found a just-over-11-percent reduction in save percentage for a goalie playing both nights of a back-to-back. The same article says later analyses by SportsMEDIA Technology’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn found the effect might be less significant. The figure is a historical estimate reported secondhand, not a current league consensus or a coaching threshold. Its illustration used an average of 31.5 shots and 28.4 saves per goalie across 1,019 NHL games through Jan. 2 in the season discussed; those sample figures are not current league averages. The Kraken article provides the context for the estimate.

What changes when a team carries three goalies?

A three-goalie setup can add roster flexibility and let a team give a planned starter a full night off. It also makes it harder to keep everyone sharp if appearances are spread too thinly. In NHL.com’s account of New Jersey’s 2025 training-camp experiment, Sharks director of goaltending Evgeni Nabokov summarized the risk: “One goalie can get hot, while the other two get rusty.” That is one reported view of the trade-off, not a verdict on every three-goalie arrangement. NHL.com’s report on the experiment describes its specific context.

Is there a standard NHL goalie rotation?

No universal schedule or numerical workload threshold is established in the cited sources. Clubs make team-specific decisions, and a team’s approach can change with its goalie pairing, schedule, health and performance. Individual examples describe particular seasons and circumstances, not permanent policies for every NHL team.
