Choose a portable solar generator by calculating the energy your essential devices need, then checking that the station can supply their running and startup power and can be recharged by compatible panels. A “solar generator” is usually a battery power station paired with solar panels—not a guarantee of whole-home backup. Start with your outage plan, not the product label.

1. List what you need to power

Write down each essential device, its running wattage, and how many hours you expect to use it each day. Estimate daily energy by multiplying watts by hours, then add the devices’ needs together. For example, a 10 W light used for 5 hours uses about 50 Wh; the estimate is only as good as the wattage and use time you enter.

For appliances that switch on and off, such as refrigerators, do not assume they draw their listed running watts continuously. Use measured consumption or the manufacturer’s energy information when available. Also decide which devices must operate simultaneously: a station may have enough stored energy for a day’s use but still be unable to run several high-power appliances at once.

Ready.gov recommends planning which items to plug in because a generator may not power all appliances at once. Make a priority list for communications, lighting, refrigeration, and medical equipment. If you rely on a medical device, discuss continuity needs with your clinician and have a plan for an outage longer than the station can cover. Ready.gov power-outage guidance

2. Match battery capacity to the outage window

Battery capacity is stated in watt-hours (Wh), an indication of stored energy. It is not a promise that the same number of watt-hours will be available from AC outlets: conversion losses, battery reserve, temperature, and actual device use affect usable energy and runtime. Use your daily load estimate to compare stations, but treat the result as a planning estimate rather than a guaranteed duration.

As a general principle, how long a battery can supply power depends on its size and state of charge, the demand placed on it, and any incoming solar generation. The U.S. Department of Energy describes these interacting factors in a facility-scale analysis; it is not a consumer runtime calculator. DOE microgrid program analysis

For an outage lasting multiple days, account for energy used each day and whether you can realistically recharge between uses. Weather, shade, panel placement, and the time available for charging all affect replenishment. Do not count on solar input as if it were continuous or guaranteed.

3. Check the inverter’s output and startup demand

Watt-hours answer how much energy is stored; watts answer how much power the station can deliver at a given moment. Add the running watts of devices you plan to use together and keep that total within the station’s continuous AC output rating.

Motors and compressors—including those in refrigerators—can need extra power when starting. Check both the appliance documentation and the station’s continuous and surge specifications. There is no universal startup allowance that can safely be applied to every appliance or station, so do not infer compatibility from battery capacity alone.

4. Verify that the solar panels will recharge the station

Before buying panels, compare their electrical output and connector with the power station’s solar input limits. Check the station’s permitted voltage and current range, maximum solar-input wattage, and whether the panel arrangement requires a parallel cable or adapter. A panel’s advertised wattage by itself does not establish compatibility.

Charging-time estimates from manufacturers apply to particular models and assumptions. Actual charging depends on sunlight, panel orientation and placement, and conditions at the site. Confirm the exact station version, supported panels, cable, and connection method in the current manufacturer documentation.

5. Compare the specifications that affect your plan

What to compare What to check Why it matters
Energy capacity Watt-hours (Wh), expected daily loads, and intended hours or days of use Sets the stored-energy budget and informs approximate runtime.
AC output Continuous watts and surge rating Determines which devices can run together and whether motors can start.
Solar recharge Maximum input watts, voltage and current limits, and connectors Determines which panels and configurations are compatible.
Portability Weight, dimensions, and handles A larger battery may extend the energy budget but can be harder to move.
Expansion and charging Documented extra-battery support, wall or car charging, and pass-through or backup modes These features vary by model; do not assume one station offers another’s options.
Emergency plan Load priorities, expected outage duration, and medical needs Electrical compatibility does not mean a device’s energy use fits your available capacity.

Jackery Explorer 1000 v2

Jackery’s U.S. product page lists a 1070 Wh battery and describes LiFePO4 cells. Its support information gives model-specific solar-charging estimates and panel-connection requirements. Verify the exact regional version and compatible accessories before planning around those details. Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 product information

EcoFlow DELTA 2

EcoFlow describes the DELTA 2 as using a LiFePO4 battery and supporting up to 500 W of solar input. Its manual says to set the AC timeout to “never” for continuous power to critical uses such as a refrigerator. That setting does not establish how long the battery will last; estimate the load and monitor the remaining charge. EcoFlow DELTA 2 product information

7. Follow the right safety practices

A battery power station stores electricity rather than burning fuel while it supplies battery power, so fuel-generator operating advice does not automatically apply. Follow the station’s manual for charging, ventilation, moisture, temperature, and electrical connections. Keep the outage plan focused on safe, essential loads.

Combustion generators have a separate carbon-monoxide hazard. Ready.gov advises using fuel generators outdoors at least 20 feet from building openings. A DOE-hosted safety guide says never to use a portable fuel generator indoors or in partly enclosed spaces, even with ventilation, and recommends carbon-monoxide alarms. Do not feed a home by plugging a generator into a wall outlet; a qualified electrician should install appropriate transfer equipment for a generator connection.
