Protect a crypto wallet by keeping its recovery phrase and private keys secret, verifying what you connect to and sign, and maintaining a secure offline backup. A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it cannot prevent every loss or replace careful handling.

Keep your recovery phrase and private keys secret

A recovery phrase or private key can give someone control of the associated wallet. Treat it as a master key: never share it with anyone, including someone claiming to be wallet support, and never enter it on a website. Ethereum.org’s security guidance says legitimate support should not ask for these secrets.

  • Write down the recovery phrase when your wallet creates it, and keep it offline in a secure place.
  • Do not photograph it, screenshot it, email it, or save it in a cloud-synced notes app. A synced copy may be exposed if an online account or device is compromised.
  • Keep backup copies private. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to control the wallet, even if they do not have your original device.

For more on backup practices, see Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance. Follow your wallet’s own instructions: some wallets require regular backups, while modern deterministic wallets may be recoverable from a phrase.

Spot phishing before you connect or sign

Scammers may imitate a wallet, exchange, support team, or giveaway to get you to reveal secrets, install malware, connect a wallet, or approve an action. An unexpected message is not proof that its link or sender is legitimate.

  • Do not click unexpected links or attachments. Navigate to a service using a bookmark or an address you have independently verified.
  • If a message claims there is a problem with your account, contact the organization through its known website or legitimate phone number—not through the message.
  • Before connecting a wallet, check that you are on the intended site. A connection or signature request can enable access or authorize actions; read what the wallet is asking you to approve.
  • Check the complete receiving address before sending funds. Address-poisoning scams can put a lookalike address in your transaction history.
  • For QR codes, check the destination URL before opening it, and never enter wallet credentials on a site reached only through a QR code.

Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance describes patterns including fake support, impersonation, phishing sites, giveaway scams, address poisoning, and QR-code phishing. The FTC also recommends slowing down, avoiding unexpected links, and contacting organizations through a known channel in its phishing guidance.

Back up the wallet without exposing the backup

A backup helps you regain access if a device is lost or damaged, but it is also sensitive: anyone who gets the recovery phrase may be able to take control. Keep recovery material offline in a secure location, and make sure you can still access it when needed. Avoid online backups, which can be stolen through compromised accounts or devices.

Use the backup and recovery procedure documented for your specific wallet. Do not assume every wallet works the same way, and do not test recovery by entering your phrase into an unfamiliar site or app.

Should you use a hardware wallet?

Hardware wallets store private keys offline, reducing their exposure to online compromise. They can still be lost, damaged, stolen, or counterfeited, so they are not a guarantee against loss. Bitcoin.org warns that counterfeit devices from third-party marketplaces may use recovery phrases known to an attacker or modified firmware.

Buy directly from the manufacturer or an authorized reseller, check the device’s integrity, and generate the recovery phrase yourself on first use. When comparing devices, consider:

  • Which assets and networks the wallet supports.
  • How recovery works if the device is lost or damaged.
  • How the device handles security updates.
  • Physical durability and ease of use.
  • Whether you can verify that the seller is authorized.

These are selection criteria, not a ranking of specific products.

Choose custody based on which risks you can manage

Self-custody and exchange custody shift responsibility in different ways; neither is universally safer. With self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for keeping the phrase safe and restoring access. With a centralized exchange account, the provider holds custody and may be able to help with account recovery, but you rely on its security and continued operation. Ethereum.org explains the distinction in its guide to creating an Ethereum account.

Approach Who controls the keys? Main responsibility or reliance

What to do if you entered your recovery phrase on a scam site

Assume that anyone who saw the phrase may be able to control that wallet. Do not use the exposed phrase to create a supposedly safer wallet; create a new wallet with a new recovery phrase that the scammer has not seen. If any funds remain, move them to the new wallet as soon as you can do so securely.

  1. Create a new wallet using a trusted wallet app or device, and keep its new recovery phrase offline and private.
  2. Move remaining funds from the exposed wallet to the new wallet. Review the destination address carefully before sending; crypto transactions generally cannot be reversed.
  3. Review and revoke token approvals associated with the exposed wallet where applicable. Ethereum.org explains compromise response and approval revocation in its scam help guidance.
  4. Change passwords for linked exchange accounts and enable two-factor authentication on related accounts. Secure your email account too if it may be involved.
  5. Stop interacting with the scam site, block or report the sender, and update your device’s security software. If you suspect malware, use a trusted device for wallet recovery and account changes.

If you only clicked a link or connected a wallet, but did not disclose the phrase, install software, or approve a transaction, the exposure may be different. Disconnect from the suspicious site, review any approvals or transactions you signed, and secure accounts if you entered passwords. Do not assume a connection alone means funds were stolen, but treat an unfamiliar approval or signature seriously.

Be wary of promises to recover stolen crypto

Cryptocurrency transactions generally cannot be reversed, so there is no guaranteed way to retrieve funds sent to a scammer. Scammers often target victims again with paid recovery offers. Do not send more crypto to anyone promising guaranteed recovery. The FTC’s cryptocurrency scam guidance explains common scam risks.
