That tells you whether the transfer is still unconfirmed, has been confirmed, or reached an address or network different from the one you intended. What you can do next depends on that status and whether the destination is controlled by an exchange or by someone else.
Check the transaction before taking action
- Find the transaction hash or ID. Open the transfer in the sending wallet or platform and copy its transaction details.
- Check the relevant block explorer. Search the hash on an explorer for the network used. Check whether the transaction is unconfirmed or confirmed and, if confirmed, how many confirmations it has. Coinbase’s transaction guidance also recommends checking the transaction status and blockchain.
- Compare the destination and network. Match the address and network recorded in the transaction against the recipient’s deposit instructions. A confirmed transaction does not ensure the recipient supports that asset on that network.
If the transfer is still pending
“Pending” is a status, not a diagnosis. It can mean the transaction is waiting for confirmations, the network is busy, the fee is insufficient for current conditions, a wallet or platform is having synchronization trouble, or the network has rejected the transaction. The receiving platform may also show a deposit as pending after it appears on-chain while it waits for its own confirmation threshold. Coinbase outlines these possible causes in its pending-transaction help article.
- If you sent the transaction through an exchange or custodial service, contact that service through its official support channel and provide the hash.
- If the transaction is unconfirmed, ask the sender or sending platform to investigate its status and fee conditions.
- Do not assume you can cancel the transfer or raise its fee. Cancellation and fee-replacement features depend on the network and wallet; the cited support guidance does not establish a universal method.
There is no reliable universal wait time. Bitcoin.org says new Bitcoin blocks are added about every 10 minutes on average, but block discovery is probabilistic, so a particular confirmation may take less or more time. That average is neither a completion-time promise nor a timing guide for other networks. See Bitcoin.org’s confirmation FAQ.
If the transfer is confirmed but missing from an exchange
First verify that the transaction’s destination address, asset, and network match the exchange’s deposit instructions. Then check the exchange’s supported asset-and-network list and its required confirmation count. An on-chain confirmation does not necessarily mean the exchange has credited the deposit: Coinbase Exchange, for example, identifies two confirmations as a BTC deposit requirement in its deposit guidance. That example is specific to Coinbase Exchange and BTC, not a rule for other providers or assets.

If the transaction appears confirmed on the explorer but the account remains uncredited, contact the exchange through its official website or app. Include the transaction hash, asset, network, amount, and the destination account details requested by the provider. Do not send the asset again just because the first deposit has not appeared in your balance.
If you sent crypto to the wrong address
Confirmed transfer to an address controlled by someone else
A confirmed on-chain transfer is generally not reversible by the sending wallet or platform. Coinbase says its cryptocurrency transactions cannot be cancelled or reversed through its service and advises contacting the recipient; Bitcoin.org likewise says that a confirmed Bitcoin payment can only be refunded by the recipient. Ask the recipient to return the funds if you can identify and reach them. If the address owner is unknown or unwilling to cooperate, the cited guidance does not establish a general recovery route.

Wrong network or unsupported asset sent to a platform
This is different from sending funds to an unrelated person’s address: a custodial platform may control the destination address and may offer a recovery process for some deposits. Contact the receiving platform promptly using its official website or app. Give support the hash, asset, network, amount, and destination account details, and ask whether that exact deposit is eligible for recovery.

Eligibility, minimum amounts, fees, and complexity depend on the provider and can change. Coinbase warns that unsupported transfers may be lost while directing users to contact support about potential recovery. Blockchain.com also describes recovery for some incorrect or unsupported transfers, but its policy is specific to that platform. Neither policy guarantees that a particular deposit can be recovered. Review the providers’ current guidance: Coinbase’s supported-cryptocurrency information and Blockchain.com’s unsupported-deposit recovery information.

Use only the wallet, exchange, or blockchain service’s official website or app to contact support. Treat unsolicited offers to recover funds, requests for your seed phrase or private keys, and demands to send additional crypto as serious warning signs. Blockchain.com specifically warns that it will not ask users to deposit significant funds to unfreeze an account or speed up a stuck transaction. Do not pay someone who claims an extra transfer will release or retrieve your crypto.
