There is no verified evidence that the custom power distributor named in this claim is a proven fix for melting RTX 5090 connectors. Two documented TecLab experiments used different modifications: one soldered wires directly to a graphics-card PCB, while another replaced the 16-pin input arrangement with three 8-pin connectors. Neither establishes a safe, durable consumer repair.
What the reported RTX 5090 modifications actually did
The phrase “custom distributor” does not match a device identified in the available reporting. The documented TecLab projects are separate experiments, and neither source verifies a distributor’s maker, electrical design, compatibility, long-term performance, or availability.
Direct wires soldered to a GPU PCB
Tom’s Hardware reported on 30 August 2026 that TecLab removed connectors from a high-end Galax RTX 5090D HOF and soldered wires to power traces on the board. The card was tested with a liquid chiller. Tom’s Hardware estimated its draw at around 600 W from a meter reading of about 50 A on the 12 V rail; this is the publication’s estimate from that reported test, not an independently established measurement series. The article warned readers not to try the modification at home. Read Tom’s Hardware’s report.
Three 8-pin connectors on a modified card
PC Gamer reported on 9 September 2026 that TecLab fitted three standard 8-pin connectors to the rear of a modified RTX 5090 PCB, using 24 cables. Its account says the connectors were operated beyond the 150 W-per-connector limit cited in the article. This one-card test does not establish standards compliance, long-term reliability, or a recommended repair. Read PC Gamer’s report.

These are specialist hardware modifications, not ordinary cable swaps. Tom’s Hardware described its direct-solder experiment as successful, but its conclusion was explicit: “Even though the experiment was a success, it’s safe to say that this is not safe; do not try this at home, kids.” That is the publication’s editorial warning, not a quote from TecLab.
Why RTX 5090 power connectors can be a concern
A high-power graphics card depends on a suitable power supply, compatible cabling, and a properly seated connector. NVIDIA’s Founders Edition guide emphasizes insertion: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.” An incompletely inserted plug is a risk the installation guidance directly addresses; the available reporting does not establish a single cause for every melting incident.

- 【Compatibility】Designed specifically for RTX 4090 and RTX 5090 graphics cards, and fully compatible with ATX 3.0/3.1 power supplies.
- 【650W & PCIe 5.0】Complies with PCIe 5.0 standards, featuring 16AWG thickened alloy copper cores. This design delivers greater current capacity and lower voltage drop, ensuring stable operation without frame drops.
- 【Premium 16AWG Material】The internal core conductor boasts ultra-low resistance, so it won’t overheat during long hours of full-load operation. The thickened wire enhances heat dissipation and current transmission efficiency, meeting the strict stability requirements of professional gamers
- 【Fixed Length】Exclusively 15.75 in (40cm) long, this cable fits perfectly in both compact ITX cases and full-tower setups. Its split wire design allows for easy cable management.
- 【Injection-Molded Reinforcement】The connector and wire root are integrated via secondary injection molding, effectively preventing loose connections, overheating, and bending damage.
MSI says the 12V-2×6 connector keeps the 16-pin 12+4 layout and power capability of 12VHPWR while improving insertion detection to reduce the risk associated with incomplete insertion. MSI also says the connectors look identical and are downward compatible. Those design changes do not mean melting is impossible or that every cable works with every power supply. MSI’s connector explanation is dated 2 December 2024.

RTX 5090 Founders Edition
NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 5090 Quick Start Guide specifies a minimum 1000 W power supply and either the included adapter with at least four PCIe 8-pin cables or one PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable rated for at least 600 W. It says to use the included adapter for the Founders Edition and to ensure the plug is fully inserted and flush. NVIDIA recommends seating the power dongle evenly before installing the card.
NVIDIA’s India-region RTX 5090 product page lists a 1000 W required system power rating, while its preparation section separately describes 850 W as the minimum for the Founders Edition and notes that a particular system may need more. These are different figures presented in different contexts on NVIDIA’s page, not a reason to disregard the supplied guide or your system’s requirements. The page also says add-in-card specifications can vary by manufacturer.

- Compatible with: 12vhpwr power cord connects your new 16 pin(12 power pins+ 4 sense pins) GPU to old 8 pin pcie power supply, with up to 600W output. Works with: RTX 5090 5080 5070 5070ti 4090 4080 4070ti
- Original Standard: Sleeved extension cable is make of alloy copper and tinned for long-term using, Bending resistant and durable
- Do ensure the pins are fully seated, hearing a distinct click and see no gap. A loose connection can cause high resistance, leading to overheating or melting at the connector point
- This is 12vhpwr not new model 12v-2x6. They are both capable of delivering 600W of power. To get the max 600W output, you must ensure that 16 pin port and 4 x 8 pin(each 150W) pice port are firmly plugged without any gap
- Please note that 12VHPWR-1X4 is compatible with most 8 pin old pcie power supply. Almost all power sources can reach 150W output
Partner cards and power-supply cables
For an add-in card from a manufacturer other than NVIDIA, check that card’s installation guide and the power-supply manufacturer’s cable guidance. Do not assume the Founders Edition adapter instructions apply to a partner card. Use only a cable confirmed as compatible with your exact PSU; a plug that fits physically is not, by itself, proof of electrical compatibility.

What to do if a connector appears damaged
- Do not copy a PCB modification. The TecLab projects were one-off experiments, not validated consumer fixes.
- Do not force or modify a cable connection. Compare the setup with the graphics-card and PSU manufacturers’ instructions.
- If you see melting, scorching, deformation, or smell burning, stop using the system. Switch it off and disconnect power only if you can do so safely; contact the card and PSU manufacturers for next steps.
- Check warranty guidance before disassembly or repair. NVIDIA’s warranty page covers GeForce graphics cards, but it does not establish the outcome of any particular melted-connector claim. See NVIDIA’s graphics-card warranty information.
