Early hands-on previews suggest that Playground Games’ new Fable is pairing the series’ British fairytale humor and choice-driven role-playing with fluid action combat. The combat and world systems have made promising first impressions, but the short, curated demos do not establish how varied or deep the experience will be across a full campaign.

What kind of Fable is this?

Fable is an open-world action RPG from Playground Games and Xbox Game Studios. Xbox describes it as a reboot and a “new beginning,” not a sequel required to fit the original trilogy’s timeline. Game Director and General Manager Ralph Fulton said the team wanted room to build its own Albion and tell a new story in Xbox Wire’s January 2026 interview.

The announced ingredients include a customizable hero, melee, ranged and magic combat, reputation, social and economic activities, and choices that affect relationships with villagers and the wider world. The aim is a recognizable fairytale setting with British humor, but a fresh story rather than a direct continuation.

What the previews have actually shown

The hands-on coverage comes from different events and slices, so the useful comparison is what each one let writers see—not simply whether a preview was positive.

Preview What it showed What it could not establish
Windows Central, Gamescom, August 31, 2026 Jennifer Young tried switching among a hammer, crossbow and magic, including lightning and a spell that turns enemies into chickens. She described the transitions as intuitive and fluid. Whether that combat loop stays fresh through a full campaign.
GamesRadar+, Gamescom, August 2026 The preview found promise in combining weapons and spells. The writer also encountered occasional crossbow firing trouble and found automatic enemy lock-on frustrating in that build. Whether those issues persist in the final game; a preview build is not proof of final-game defects.
TechRadar, Summer Game Fest, July 1, 2026 Rob Dwiar focused on reputation and how actions could affect townspeople and local life. The slice was brief, and the preview wanted more detail on builds, skills and combat depth.
Xbox Wire, Gamescom, August 28, 2026 An 18-minute quest through Bowerstone showed exploration; Xbox also described being able to enter every building and buy every house. A short quest presentation does not demonstrate the full scope or depth of those systems across the game.

How does combat look so far?

The clearest positive signal is the intended rhythm: move between close-range weapons, ranged attacks and spells rather than relying on one approach. Young’s Gamescom session found those transitions smooth, with a mix of weapon and magic options. GamesRadar’s account also saw potential in combinations, while recording control frustrations with the crossbow and lock-on in its own session.

Those accounts can both be true: they describe different hands-on experiences, not a controlled comparison of the same build and conditions. Together they suggest an appealing combat foundation, but not a settled verdict on responsiveness, balance or long-term variety. The available previews do not show whether the options evolve enough to sustain a campaign.

Does the world seem more than a backdrop?

Preview material points to social and economic systems as part of play, not just scenery. Xbox’s Bowerstone quest presentation showed a town to explore, while its description of enterable buildings and purchasable houses signals that players may interact with the world through ownership as well as quests. TechRadar’s preview emphasized reputation and the prospect that actions can affect townspeople and local life.

That is evidence of the systems being presented, not proof of how much they change the story or how consistently they matter across settlements. Fulton said the team wanted activities to be available across settlements instead of forcing players into one strict order; after the protagonist leaves the village, he said, players can broadly choose where to go. The full campaign’s pacing and the depth of those choices remain unestablished.

What is the story setup?

According to Fulton’s January 22, 2026 interview with Xbox Wire, the story begins when the hero is a child and their powers emerge. After a time jump, the adult protagonist returns to Briar Hill, where a mysterious stranger has turned the protagonist’s grandmother and others to stone. Players can pursue that mystery or explore.

Fulton’s “new beginning” description explains the developers’ intent to create their own take on Albion; it is not a guarantee that every story or design choice will land for longtime fans.

What we still cannot judge

These are early impressions of limited, curated material, not evidence about the completed game. The previews do not establish campaign-length pacing, total content, performance across platforms or final balance. The strongest current read is that combat and world interaction have promising building blocks; whether they form a consistently deep role-playing adventure is still an open question.
