Check your device’s microphone-use indicator first, then open its recent-access view to identify the app. If the access is unexpected, review that app’s microphone permission and revoke it if the app does not need it. An indicator confirms that the operating system registered microphone access; it does not prove audio was recorded, saved, or transmitted.

Check microphone use on iPhone or iPad

On iPhone running iOS 14 or later, an orange dot indicates that an app is using the microphone. If Differentiate Without Colour is enabled under Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size, the indicator may appear as an orange square. A green indicator means the camera is active, either alone or together with the microphone. Apple explains the indicators in its iPhone status-bar guide.

  1. When the orange indicator appears, open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner on supported iPhones, or use the device’s usual Control Center gesture.
  2. Check the recent-use information there to see which app recently used the microphone or camera. Apple notes that Control Center shows recent use in its privacy controls overview.
  3. For a longer history, open Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report, if available and enabled. It shows how often apps accessed the microphone during the last seven days.
  4. To change access, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn off access for an app that does not need it. Labels can vary by iOS release.

Check microphone use on Android

Android displays a green privacy indicator near the top of the screen when the microphone or camera is in use. Tap the indicator to identify the app using or recently using the microphone. The indicator’s recent-access view is brief: Android’s technical documentation describes microphone and camera access shown there as covering the prior 15 seconds. It is not the same as the longer history in Privacy Dashboard.

  1. When the green indicator appears, tap it and review the app or apps listed.
  2. For access during the preceding 24 hours, open Settings > Privacy Dashboard and select microphone. Depending on the Android version and device maker, you may instead find this under Permission Manager or Microphone.
  3. To revoke an app’s access, open its microphone permission in Settings and deny it if microphone functionality is not needed.
  4. On supported devices, use the system-wide camera and microphone access control to block access across apps when appropriate.

Android’s privacy settings guide describes the indicator and Privacy Dashboard; the Android Open Source Project documentation explains the shorter indicator history.

Check microphone use on Windows 10 or Windows 11

Windows displays a microphone icon in the taskbar notification area while an app is using the microphone. Microsoft documents this indicator and its privacy controls in its Windows camera, microphone, and privacy guide.

  1. Open the microphone privacy page: in Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone; in Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Privacy > Microphone.
  2. Review device-level access, app permissions, and desktop-app access. Settings may show a specific file for detected activity, which can help identify use.
  3. Turn off access for apps that do not need it, using the controls available for that type of app.

These controls have limits. Microsoft says conventional desktop apps may not appear in the app list, cannot always be individually toggled, and might still access the microphone when the desktop-app setting is off. Treat the page as useful activity evidence, not a complete audit. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; this does not change the microphone-check path, but it is relevant when considering broader security support.

Check a website’s microphone permission in your browser

A website can request microphone access separately from the browser’s operating-system permission. For Microsoft Edge, open Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site Permissions > All sites, select the site, then block Microphone access. The site still needs individual permission even if Edge itself is allowed to use the microphone in Windows.

For Chrome or another browser, open its site permissions and look for Microphone; menu labels and paths vary. Do not assume that changing the browser’s operating-system permission also revokes a site’s individual permission.

What to do when microphone activity is unexpected

  1. Use the indicator’s access view or the platform’s privacy settings to identify the app.
  2. End the call, recording, dictation, voice-assistant request, or other activity if you did not expect it.
  3. Review whether the app has a feature that legitimately needs microphone access.
  4. Revoke permission if the app does not need it. Voice calls, dictation, recording, and web conferencing may stop working until you grant permission again.

Microphone access alone does not reveal why an app accessed the microphone or what it did with any audio. An indicator is not proof that audio was saved or sent elsewhere, and targeted advertisements do not by themselves establish microphone spying.
