Chrome and Firefox document reset options that keep bookmarks; Edge’s cited reset is a cloud-sync operation, so export favorites first. For Safari, current Apple instructions are not established here, so don’t assume a reset will preserve bookmarks. Before any reset, identify what kind of operation you’re about to perform and, where possible, save an HTML bookmark or favorites export somewhere you can retrieve it.
Back up bookmarks before resetting
An export gives you a separate recovery copy; browser sync is not the same thing as a verified local backup. Save the exported HTML file to a known location and check that it exists before proceeding. An optional second copy on an offline drive can provide another fallback.
- Confirm the correct browser profile or account is active.
- If the browser offers bookmark or favorites export, create the HTML file and verify it is saved.
- Expect that cookies may sign you out, while extensions, themes, permissions, or preferences may need to be restored manually.

Reset Chrome on desktop without deleting bookmarks
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
- Go to Settings > Reset settings.
- Select Restore settings to their original defaults, then choose Reset settings.
Google’s documented operation retains saved bookmarks and passwords, but can clear cookies and site data and remove extensions and themes. If Chrome’s settings are unavailable, Google suggests uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome; that is a different, more disruptive route, so export bookmarks first if you take it. Google’s reset instructions and bookmark import guidance explain the available recovery paths.
Export Chrome bookmarks first
Open Chrome’s Bookmark Manager and use its export option to save bookmarks as an HTML file. Google says imported bookmarks go to the bookmarks bar when there were no existing bookmarks, or to Other bookmarks when bookmarks already exist. Keep track of where you saved the file so you can find it during import.

Refresh Firefox while keeping bookmarks
- In Firefox, open Help > More troubleshooting information.
- Select Refresh Firefox, confirm, and complete the restart flow.
Mozilla says Refresh preserves bookmarks, browsing and download history, passwords, cookies, form autofill, and the personal dictionary. It removes extensions, themes, site permissions, modified preferences, and other customizations listed in Mozilla’s Refresh guide. The previous profile is placed on the desktop in a folder named Old Firefox Data; it can contain sensitive information, so delete it when it is no longer needed.
Mozilla says Refresh may be unavailable with the new profile-management system unless Firefox is updated to version 150 or later; the support article gives April 21, 2026 as that version’s release date. Check the current installed version and Mozilla’s current instructions if the option is missing. If Firefox will not start normally, Mozilla says Refresh can be launched from Troubleshoot Mode. Reset Edge cloud data without confusing it with local settings
Microsoft’s cited procedure is specifically for Edge data in the cloud and sync. It should not be treated as proof that every Edge reset preserves or removes local favorites. Before using it, export favorites as Microsoft recommends:
- Open Edge and press Ctrl+Shift+O to open Favorites.
- Select More options > Export favorites.
- Save the generated HTML file somewhere retrievable and check that it exists.
- If troubleshooting sync, try Re-sync first; Microsoft’s guidance says to use Reset sync if the problem persists.
- Keep Edge open until the reset completes.
Microsoft says the export file can be used to restore favorites later. It also documents importing favorites from HTML in its cloud reset and recovery guidance. Edge sync has separate data-type controls, including favorites; synced copies on other signed-in devices are useful, but do not replace checking that your export file was saved. Safari: verify the exact platform before changing data
A Safari reset procedure and its effect on bookmarks are not established here by current Apple support guidance. Since Safari runs on both macOS and iPhone/iPad and the procedures may differ, do not follow a generic “reset Safari” menu path or assume bookmarks will be kept. Consult Apple Support instructions for your specific device and operation before proceeding; where an export or separate backup is available, verify it before making changes.

If one website is the only problem, clearing that site’s data or permissions may be less disruptive than resetting settings for the entire browser. Chrome includes cookies and site data among the affected settings, and Chrome and Edge expose site-related settings or data controls. Choose the narrowest change that addresses the problem, especially if you rely on saved sign-ins or custom permissions.
