When a running back gets more work, first measure how his carries, targets, touches and snaps changed—and whether he inherited passing-down and goal-line duties. Then assess rushing and receiving efficiency in context. A short stretch with a bigger workload can show what a player did with that opportunity; by itself, it does not establish a full-season expectation.
1. Compare the right time periods
Set a pre-change window beside the period in which the back took on a lead role. Record how many games each covers and whether the player and his teammates were available. Note meaningful differences in opponent and game script, too: a lead late in a lopsided game is not the same assignment as a full game in a competitive contest.
Use comparable games where possible. If an injury shortened one window, say so rather than comparing its totals directly with a full-season total. The point is to identify what changed with the role, not to imply that unlike samples are equivalent.
2. Measure opportunity and the kind of work
Count the work before grading the results. For each window, track carries, targets, receptions, total touches and offensive snaps. Add the player’s share of the team’s running-back carries, touches and targets; team-relative shares help distinguish a larger role from a team simply running more plays.

Then identify which assignments came with the added volume. If the data is available, check snap share on early downs, third downs, two-minute offense, in the red zone and near the goal line, as well as pass-protection work. More early-down carries are not the same opportunity as a role that also includes receiving and high-value situations.
PFF’s retrospective analysis of its defined 2024 PPR RB1 group found that all 12 backs led their teams in positional red-zone and green-zone snap share. Ten of the 12 led in at least one of two measured passing-down roles. PFF also reported stronger associations between success and snap share, situational snap share, rushing-attempt share and touch volume than with per-play efficiency alone. These are descriptions of a selected successful group, not proof that any one share causes a back to become an RB1 or a forecast for every player or scoring format. Read PFF’s 2024 RB1 analysis.

3. Separate workload from efficiency
Report opportunity first, then evaluate production per opportunity. Keep rushing and receiving distinct: a back can handle more carries without adding targets, or become a more complete player by taking on both. Do not let one average—especially yards per carry—stand in for the whole performance.

Use measures only when you know how the data source defines them. The NFL Analytics Textbook presents a dual-threat approach using rushing and receiving EPA and success rates, and describes contextual inputs for yards over expected. A rate from a few carries or routes is a small-sample observation, not necessarily a stable skill estimate. See the NFL Analytics Textbook.

4. Put the numbers in their football context
Observed efficiency is shaped by more than the runner. Consider offensive-line blocking, the run concept, defensive front and box count, quarterback run or pass threat, opponent, down and distance, field position and game script. When possible, compare similar situations rather than treating every carry as interchangeable.
Opta’s review of Derrick Henry’s 2024 season illustrates why context belongs beside production: it discusses his workload along with Baltimore’s run blocking, Lamar Jackson’s presence, defensive box counts and run concepts. Opta reported 6.1 yards per carry and 338.0 total EVE for Henry that season; EVE compares yards gained with league-wide expected yards in a situation. A team’s own benchmark can clarify what it considers a successful run, but it should not be mistaken for a league-wide standard. In 2024, Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson described the Lions’ rule: gain at least one-third of the distance on first down, half on second down, and convert on third down. Detroit said it met that benchmark on 55% of runs through its first seven games. That figure reflects Detroit’s stated criteria and that period, not a universal definition of running-back efficiency. When a teammate is out, the replacement’s production can show how the offense used him under those conditions. It cannot, on its own, tell you whether the same workload will continue when that teammate returns or whether short-term efficiency will persist.

For example, the Detroit Lions reported in 2025 that Jahmyr Gibbs averaged 21 carries and 122 rushing yards per game over the final three regular-season games of 2024 while David Montgomery was out. The same report listed Gibbs at 182 carries in 2023 and 250 in 2024. The three-game stretch is useful evidence of what Gibbs did during an expanded role; it does not independently establish durability or a full-season workload expectation. The available evidence here does not establish a universal sustainable carry limit or an individual workload threshold that predicts injury or decline. Avoid turning a single carry total into such a rule.
6. State what the evidence supports
A sound evaluation separates observed facts from what remains uncertain. Say whether the back received more work, took on new situations, and produced efficiently in the sample. Then identify what would affect any longer-term interpretation: whether the role continues, how the team distributes work when teammates are available, and whether the sample is large and comparable enough to support a broader conclusion.
