You can monetize an eligible website with Google AdSense by applying, verifying that you control the site, passing Google’s content and policy review, then placing ads in ways that do not mislead visitors or encourage clicks. AdSense is free to join, but approval and earnings are not guaranteed: Google gives no universal traffic minimum or fixed payout per click.

How AdSense monetization works

AdSense lets eligible publishers show Google-served ads on their websites and earn when visitors view or click them, depending on the ad and product. Google does not promise a particular site’s acceptance or income. Revenue depends on factors such as the ads served and the site’s audience; the official revenue-share percentages describe how revenue is divided, not what a publisher will earn.

AdSense is one possible part of a site’s monetization plan. Before applying, check that you can meet the eligibility requirements, control the site setup, and comply with Google’s publisher policies.

What you need before applying

  • Age: The applicant must be at least 18. If you are under 18, Google says a parent or guardian may sign up using their own Google Account. Google’s eligibility requirements state that applicants need original content that complies with its policies.
  • Original content: Your site should have content you created or have the rights to use, and it must meet Google’s quality and policy requirements. Review the whole site, including user-generated content and links or ads from other providers.
  • Site access: You generally need access to your site’s HTML to verify ownership and install AdSense code. Google also supports some host-partner and CMS signup or setup routes. See Google’s site-ownership guidance for the options.
  • Policy compliance: The site and the way ads are presented must follow Google’s Publisher Policies. Not every type of content can receive ads.

Google’s cited eligibility requirements do not set a universal minimum number of visitors. A traffic threshold should not be treated as a requirement unless Google’s current guidance for your specific signup route says otherwise.

How to apply and get your site reviewed

  1. Sign in to AdSense and add your site. Use the Sites workflow in your AdSense account to submit the site you want reviewed.
  2. Verify that you control the site. Follow the verification method Google offers for your setup. Where the code-snippet method is available, add the AdSense snippet to the page’s <head> section as instructed. A supported host partner or CMS may provide another route.
  3. Check the site and submit it for review. Confirm that the site is accessible and its content and ad placements comply with policy. Google checks site ownership and policy compliance before ads can serve.
  4. Wait for Google’s decision. Google says review usually takes a few days, though some reviews take two to four weeks. This is a typical range, not a guaranteed deadline. Follow any status or setup instructions shown in your account.
  5. After approval, configure ad placements. Choose formats and positions that are clear to visitors and do not create accidental clicks. Check the current AdSense interface and policy guidance for the available options.

For Google’s current account-specific steps, consult the AdSense site review and setup guidance.

How much does AdSense pay?

There is no reliable fixed amount per click or universal earnings estimate in Google’s cited guidance. The percentages below describe Google’s revenue share for specific products and calculation bases; they are not forecasts of a site’s income.

Product or transaction Google’s stated publisher share What the figure means
AdSense for Content 80% after the advertiser platform fee Google says publishers receive 80% of revenue after the advertiser platform’s fee. In its example where advertisers use Google Ads to buy display ads on AdSense, publishers keep about 68% of revenue.
AdSense for Search 51% Google says publishers receive 51% of the revenue recognized by Google for this product.

Sources: Google’s AdSense revenue-share explanation and Google’s AdSense for Search terms. The cited Help pages do not state a publication year for these figures. Google says its revenue-share percentages are consistent across publisher geographies, but cautions that comparing the percentages alone can be misleading; consider total revenue and product terms instead. A platform partner may also take a share, so check your partner agreement and account details.

Keep ads compliant and clear to visitors

Policy violations can lead Google to disable ad serving or close an account. Google also distinguishes prohibited content or behavior from Publisher Restrictions: restricted content may receive fewer ads or none, without that restriction alone necessarily being a policy violation. Read Google’s Publisher Policies and restrictions and its ad placement policies.

  • Never click your own ads, ask visitors to click, or offer incentives for clicks.
  • Do not make ads look like navigation, editorial content, or other site controls. Avoid misleading labels, images, or formatting that could confuse visitors.
  • Do not place ads in disallowed locations such as pop-ups, pop-unders, or email messages.
  • Review the entire site for policy issues, including user-generated material and other links or ads.
  • Do not distribute AdSense earnings to third parties without Google’s written permission. Google’s policy specifically addresses revenue-sharing arrangements in exchange for services or traffic; see the AdSense program policies.

Google’s Program Policies page states that it was last updated August 4, 2026. Since policies and product terms can change, use the current official guidance linked above when making setup or placement decisions.
