Python’s recent rise is real in several developer-focused measures, but there is no single universal popularity ranking. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey found Python adoption among respondents up seven percentage points from its 2024 survey. GitHub, measuring activity on its own platform, ranked Python first in 2024; its 2025 report says TypeScript took the top spot in August 2025 while Python remained prominent in AI and data science. Those findings describe different populations, measures and dates—not a contradiction about every programmer everywhere.
Why is Python so popular?
Six forces help explain Python’s visibility: its role in AI and machine learning, its use in data science, its readable syntax, its appeal to people learning to code, its presence across several kinds of software work, and the large public project ecosystem visible on GitHub. These are evidence-supported explanations, not experimentally proven causes of Python’s growth.
1. AI and machine learning work
AI projects and machine-learning activity are among the factors GitHub associates with Python’s rise on its platform in 2024. Stack Overflow also describes Python as a go-to language for AI-related work. That makes AI an important reason developers encounter Python today, but the available findings show association and use, not that AI alone caused adoption to increase. GitHub’s 2024 Octoverse report and Stack Overflow’s 2025 technology survey provide those platform and survey perspectives.
2. Data science and analysis
Python is a major language in data science, according to both Stack Overflow’s survey and GitHub’s Octoverse coverage. Its place in analytical and notebook-based work helps explain why it appears in research, education and applied data projects, as well as in software development. These reports identify data science as a prominent domain; they do not quantify Python’s share of all data-science work.

3. Readable, expressive syntax
JetBrains’ 2025 commentary identifies Python’s expressive, readable syntax as one appeal. That can make code easier for many people to scan and write, but perceived readability is subjective; it does not mean every developer finds Python easy or that syntax by itself explains adoption. JetBrains’ 2025 article on Python’s popularity reports this as a developer-facing explanation, not a measured causal effect.
4. Appeal to people learning to code
Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey summary says Python is especially popular among people learning to code. That learner audience can broaden the language’s reach beyond experienced software engineers. It is evidence of popularity among learners, not proof that Python is the easiest language or the best first choice for every person or project. Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey summary describes the finding.

5. Use across different kinds of work
Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey summary points to Python use in AI, data science and back-end development. A language encountered in several work areas can serve learners and working developers with different goals, helping it remain visible across communities. The survey supports those use areas, but does not measure Python’s share within each one.
6. A visible project ecosystem
Public repositories make software projects discoverable, and GitHub’s language rankings offer one visible measure of activity in that ecosystem. Python’s first-place position on GitHub in 2024 added to its visibility there. Such a ranking captures activity on GitHub—not every software project, developer or programming task—so it should not be read as a universal league table. GitHub’s 2024 Octoverse reports the ranking; the 2025 report provides the later platform context.

What the popularity numbers do—and do not—say
Different figures answer different questions. A survey asks a defined group what they use or do; a platform ranking measures activity within that platform. Neither alone counts every programmer or establishes which language is best.
| Finding | What it measures | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Python adoption rose 7 percentage points from Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey to its 2025 survey. | Self-reported adoption among the surveys’ respondents, as reported by Stack Overflow in 2025. | A notable survey increase, not a global census or a seven-percent increase in all code written. Stack Overflow 2025 technology survey. |
| 57% of surveyed developers reported using Python in the last 12 months. | JetBrains’ 2025 survey population and its stated 12-month window. | A survey-specific usage figure, not a rate for all developers. JetBrains 2025 commentary. |
| Python ranked first on GitHub in 2024, overtaking JavaScript. | Language activity in GitHub’s 2024 platform ranking. | A dated GitHub-specific result, not an all-industry ranking. GitHub Octoverse 2024. |
| TypeScript became GitHub’s most-used language in August 2025; Python remained prominent in AI and data science workloads. | GitHub activity reported for that month and platform-specific workload context. | The platform leader changed; that does not erase Python’s role in AI and data science or establish a universal winner. GitHub 2025 report. |
| 69% of surveyed developers said they spent time in the previous year learning coding techniques or a programming language. | General learning activity among Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey respondents. | This is not a statistic about Python learning specifically. Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey announcement. |
How to read competing language rankings
Before treating a claim such as “the most popular language” as definitive, check four things:
Rank #4

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Population: Is the source surveying respondents or counting activity by contributors on a platform?
- Metric: Does it report self-reported use, repository activity or another measure?
- Time window: Is the result from a survey year, a calendar year or a specific month?
- Scope: Does it describe software work generally or a domain such as AI and data science?
Applied to the cited findings, Stack Overflow’s seven-point change is a survey trend, GitHub’s 2024 first-place result is historical platform evidence, and GitHub’s August 2025 update names a different platform leader. Each can be accurate within its own scope. None establishes a single winner for all developers and all kinds of work.
