Protect a self-custody Bitcoin wallet by keeping its recovery material secret and offline, making the correct backup before storing funds, and following the wallet maker’s official recovery instructions if a device is lost or damaged. A lost device may be replaceable; a missing recovery phrase, wallet file, or required password may not be. Never give a recovery phrase or private key to support staff or a recovery service.

Protect the backup before you need it

A wallet does not hold bitcoins in the way a physical wallet holds cash. It manages the keys that authorize transactions. A backup preserves the information needed to restore access, but what that backup consists of depends on the wallet. Many modern wallets use a recovery phrase; others may require a wallet file, password, additional backup material, or periodic backups. Check the official instructions for your exact wallet rather than assuming every wallet restores the same way. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance and its wallet backup FAQ explain why backup methods vary.

Make and store the wallet’s documented backup

  • Identify the wallet software or device and its official backup instructions before relying on it to store funds.
  • Create the required backup during setup, and confirm that you understand what information and any password or passphrase recovery requires.
  • Keep recovery material offline. Do not photograph it, put it in cloud storage, or enter it into a website, message, or support form.
  • Protect it from both theft and physical loss. Consider durable media and more than one secure physical location, while ensuring that the locations themselves do not expose it to other people.

Anyone who obtains a recovery phrase may be able to access the associated wallet. Treat it like a key, not like ordinary account information. Bitcoin.org specifically advises keeping recovery phrases private and secure in its FAQ.

Choose storage that fits how you use bitcoin

Hot wallets, offline storage, and multisignature setups involve different balances of convenience, exposure, and recovery work. No one arrangement is universally best: choose one you can set up correctly and maintain.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Setup Internet exposure and routine use Backup, key, and recovery considerations
Hot wallet Runs on an internet-connected device; convenient for everyday spending, but exposed to risks affecting that device. Backup requirements depend on the wallet. Losing the device may be recoverable if its required backup and any necessary password remain available; losing those can remove the recovery path.
Hardware wallet or other offline storage Keeps signing keys offline during ordinary use, making it an option for savings; spending is less immediate than with a hot wallet. Correct setup and a safe, wallet-compatible backup are still essential. Losing or damaging the device does not by itself guarantee loss if the required backup remains available, but losing the backup or required credentials can prevent recovery.
Multisignature wallet Requires multiple independent approvals to authorize spending, rather than relying on one key alone. Requires careful coordination of multiple keys and their backups. It can add setup and recovery complexity; losing a key or misunderstanding the recovery arrangement may make funds inaccessible.

Bitcoin.org describes hot wallets as useful for everyday spending and offline wallets as an option for savings, and discusses hardware wallets and multisignature as security approaches. The practical difference is not simply “secure” versus “insecure”: it is how exposed the signing process is, how quickly you can spend, and whether you can reliably protect and recover every required backup or key. See Bitcoin.org’s security guidance and FAQ.

Reduce risks on the wallet’s device

  • Keep wallet software and the device’s operating system updated.
  • Use a strong password where the wallet supports one, and encrypt the wallet when that option is available.
  • Understand the limit: encryption does not necessarily protect secrets from a keylogger or a compromised device.
  • Before sending bitcoin, verify the full receiving address using a trusted method. Do not rely on a partial match or assume an address copied to the clipboard is unchanged.

These steps reduce avoidable exposure, but they do not replace a secure backup. Bitcoin.org covers encryption, updates, and offline storage in its wallet security guidance. Its scam guidance also warns about address manipulation, stolen recovery phrases, fake recovery services, and counterfeit hardware wallets.

Recover access after a device is lost or damaged

First establish what is missing. A damaged or lost device is not the same as a lost key: if you have the backup and any required password or passphrase, the wallet may be restorable on an authentic compatible device or wallet. The exact process depends on the wallet, its backup format, and its configuration. Official guidance does not establish one recovery procedure that works for every wallet.

  1. Identify the exact wallet. Find its official website or documentation independently; do not follow a recovery link sent in an unsolicited message.
  2. Check what recovery requires. Confirm whether the wallet uses a recovery phrase, wallet file, password, passphrase, or other wallet-specific backup. Do not guess or substitute one for another.
  3. Use the documented recovery route. Follow current instructions from the wallet maker and use an authentic compatible device or wallet. Avoid unofficial downloads and devices from untrusted sources.
  4. Keep recovery material private throughout. Enter it only where the wallet’s official documented process requires it, not into a website, message, support form, or tool offered by someone who contacted you.
  5. Stop if the instructions do not match your wallet. Seek help through the maker’s official support channel without disclosing a phrase, private key, or other secret.

Bitcoin.org explains that self-custody places responsibility for access on the wallet holder, and that losing access can mean permanent loss (Some things you need to know). Bitcoin Core’s documentation distinguishes backups, seeds, and passphrases and warns that a forgotten passphrase can prevent access (Managing wallets). Bitcoin’s developer documentation also explains wallet and key concepts, including the risk of loss before a backup exists (Wallets).

If you suspect a recovery phrase or key was exposed

Assume an exposed recovery phrase or private key is compromised. Do not share it again while seeking help, and do not trust anyone promising guaranteed recovery for a fee. Scammers may target people precisely when they are locked out or worried about theft. Bitcoin.org advises rejecting requests for seed phrases and private keys and warns about fake recovery services in its scam guidance.

The exact steps for moving funds away from an exposed key depend on the wallet and its configuration. Use the wallet maker’s current official instructions; do not rely on generic migration directions that could cause an irreversible mistake. If you cannot verify the instructions, pause rather than disclose secrets to an unofficial helper.

What a backup cannot guarantee

A backup is useful only if it contains what that particular wallet needs and remains readable, available, and protected from theft. A lost device can often be replaced when the required recovery material and credentials are intact. If the only required backup or password is gone, self-custody may leave no recovery path. Neither a hardware wallet nor a recovery service can guarantee access when the necessary secrets have been lost. For wallets with multiple signers or special passphrases, document the recovery arrangement securely and make sure trusted heirs can understand the plan if that matters to you; Bitcoin.org also discusses inheritance planning in its security guidance.
