Florian Wirtz is an attacking midfielder and roaming playmaker, not a player tied to one fixed position. He is particularly dangerous when he can start from the left or move into the left half-space, receive facing forward with room to turn, and carry the ball toward defenders. His role has changed by team, opponent and period: he has also played as a central No. 10, on the right and as a false nine.
Wirtz’s position in brief
UEFA lists Wirtz simply as a midfielder, a broad roster label rather than a tactical description (UEFA profile). In football terms, attacking midfielder or free-roaming playmaker is more useful. He operates between midfield and attack, moves across the final third and can begin from a side before drifting into central spaces.
“Inverted winger” and “left-sided No. 10” describe different aspects of his Leverkusen role rather than conflicting positions. The first describes where he often appeared; the second explains his function in the team’s shape.
Where he played at Bayer Leverkusen
In 2024–25, Wirtz often appeared on the left and came inside, while retaining the freedom to roam like a No. 10. Liverpool FC’s June 20, 2025 profile says 45% of his open-play touches were on the left side of the opposition half that Bundesliga season (Liverpool FC profile).

In Xabi Alonso’s 3-4-2-1, Premier League analysis describes him as the left-sided No. 10, with permission to move across the attacking third. Leverkusen’s possession dominance generally kept him high rather than requiring him to drop deep often (Premier League analysis). Liverpool FC also notes that Alonso used him as a false nine at times in 2023–24; that was a tactical variation, not his defining role.
How his Liverpool role has varied
Early 2025–26: central No. 10 and build-up work
Analysis of Liverpool’s opening phase of 2025–26 described Wirtz as the main No. 10 in a 4-2-3-1. The positioning of the surrounding attackers meant he received closer to the right flank at times, and he also dropped toward midfield or the centre-backs to help build attacks. That account argued this could take him away from the left half-space and advanced areas where he had done much of his best Leverkusen work; it describes that period, not a permanent assignment (Premier League analysis).

BBC Sport’s October 3, 2025 tactical analysis likewise noted that Liverpool asked him to receive deeper and help with build-up, reducing how often he was close to goal. Against compact opponents, receiving centrally between the lines can leave him little time and space to turn (BBC Sport analysis).
Later 2025–26: wider pockets and more advanced positions
A later Premier League analysis describes Wirtz appearing as a No. 10, on either side and as a false nine. It says he began finding more advanced pockets and wider areas rather than remaining in crowded central spaces. In that article’s sample, central touches between halfway and the 18-yard box fell from 37% in his first 15 Premier League appearances to 27% from the Spurs match onward. Left-side touches from halfway to the byline rose from 14% to 32% (Premier League analysis).

The same analysis compared his first 15 matches with its “last six matches” period: completed dribbles rose from 14 to 16; passes were listed as 45.60 per game in the first period and 73.80 per 90 in the later one; shots increased from 1.61 to 2.52 per 90, and touches in the opposition box from 5.02 to 7.92 per 90. Those are the article’s specified samples and measures, not directly comparable season averages. Its explanation links the shift partly to more involvement across the attacking midfield zone and another midfielder taking the No. 10 space, allowing Wirtz to stay higher.
What makes Wirtz most effective?
Space to receive and turn
His best conditions begin before he gets the ball. BBC Sport’s tactical correspondent says Wirtz benefits from receiving with distance between himself and the nearest defender. If he can take the ball on the back foot and face forward, he can drive into space rather than immediately having to shield it or play backward.

A left-side starting lane, with freedom to move
Starting on the left can give Wirtz access to the half-space and a route to cut inside. His role should not be mistaken for staying on the touchline: he is more valuable when free to move into central and advanced pockets after receiving. Liverpool FC’s touch distribution and Premier League’s account of his Leverkusen role both support the left as an important reference point, not an exclusive location.
Forward carries and useful spacing
Wirtz’s dribbling and passing are most threatening when he can carry toward opponents. Body feints and changes of speed can unsettle a defensive line, particularly in transition when the opposition is stretched. If he must drop deep to progress the ball and also provide the final-third threat, he has fewer opportunities to operate near goal. A teammate who shares build-up duties can help preserve his higher starting position, though no particular formation guarantees that outcome.

Energy for pressing as well as creativity
His value is not limited to possession. Liverpool FC reported that he led the Bundesliga in 2024–25 with 1.25 high turnovers per 90 and led Leverkusen with 679 pressures across nine Champions League appearances. Those figures are specific to that season and competition, but they illustrate why his role must also account for the physical demand of pressing.

The evidence points to conditions rather than one universally correct position. A left-sided No. 10 or an attacking role with permission to drift can give Wirtz access to his preferred half-space, but the team also needs to find him facing forward and avoid asking him to do so much early build-up that he is removed from the box. A central No. 10 role can work when he has room between lines; against compact defenses, that same central lane may be crowded. Wide or false-nine appearances are options, not proof that he is best fixed in either role.
- Does his starting position give him access to the left half-space?
- Can he receive with separation and face forward?
- Are other players sharing enough build-up responsibility for him to stay advanced?
- Can he drift between lines rather than being fixed in a crowded central channel?
- Does the setup leave him enough energy for creative actions as well as pressing?
Wirtz himself has described wanting responsibility and wanting the ball to resolve situations. In a June 2025 Liverpool FC profile, the club quoted him speaking to Sports Illustrated: “I believe my teammates value me very much and know that I like to take on responsibility. That starts with always wanting to have the ball on the pitch to resolve situations.”
