For whole, intact pumpkins, the best chance of long storage comes from harvesting carefully, curing the fruit, then keeping it shaded, ventilated and around 50–55°F (10–13°C) with 50–70% relative humidity. Avoid bruises, broken stems, freezing and prolonged temperatures below 50°F. Even under good conditions, storage life varies by variety and fruit condition.
Harvest pumpkins carefully before a hard freeze
Leave pumpkins on the vine until mature if weather allows, but bring them in before a hard freeze. Penn State says a freeze below 28°F can weaken the rind; lightly frosted vines do not automatically mean the pumpkins are lost. Fruit exposed to freezing conditions is less likely to keep well. Penn State Extension explains harvest and handling risks.
- Use clean, sharp pruning shears or a knife to cut the stem rather than pulling or twisting the pumpkin from the vine.
- Leave the stem attached, but carry the pumpkin by its body—not by the stem, which can break.
- Set fruit down gently and avoid punctures, bruises and other rind damage. Damaged skin gives bacteria and disease an entry point, making storage less dependable.
Cure sound pumpkins before long-term storage
Curing hardens the rind and can help minor cuts or scratches heal. University of Minnesota Extension describes it as a process that lets the fruit rind harden, allowing longer storage life. Cure only sound fruit; a pumpkin with significant damage or decay should be used promptly rather than counted on for long storage.
The recommended time and conditions vary. In warm, rainless weather, University of Minnesota Extension recommends 7–10 days of field curing. If outdoor weather is unsuitable, cure pumpkins in a covered, warm place with good airflow. Illinois Extension gives a more controlled recommendation of 10–14 days at 80–85°F, 80–85% relative humidity and good air circulation. Choose a cool, dry, ventilated storage spot
After curing, move pumpkins to a shaded area with airflow. Aim for about 50–55°F and 50–70% relative humidity, the range recommended in the extension guidance for long-term storage. Keep fruit from touching one another where practical, and avoid damp surfaces or stagnant, humid conditions that encourage decay. An indoor thermometer-hygrometer can help you check the conditions; no particular model is required.
- Keep them above chilling temperatures: Do not store pumpkins below 50°F for long-term keeping. Illinois Extension warns that pumpkins deteriorate below 50°F, so a refrigerator or cold cellar is not a suitable place for whole pumpkins intended for extended storage.
- Keep them away from apples and pears: These fruits release ethylene, which can cause pumpkins to yellow and shorten their storage life.
- Inspect the crop: Check regularly for soft spots, mold or decay. Use damaged fruit first, and prioritize sound fruit if the storage area becomes too warm or too cold.

How long will a pumpkin last after harvest?
There is no guaranteed lifespan for every pumpkin. Penn State Extension’s 2025 storage table lists 8–12 weeks for pumpkins generally when stored at 50–55°F and 50–70% relative humidity. Illinois Extension says pumpkins may keep for up to six months under those same temperature and humidity conditions. The figures differ because they are guidance estimates, not a promise for every variety or home storage setup.

Variety, maturity at harvest, injuries, curing, humidity, airflow and inspection all affect how long a pumpkin remains usable. Penn State notes that storage times vary among winter squash types, with some keeping shorter or longer than others; no single figure applies to every pumpkin. Penn State’s storage-rot guidance provides additional context on the range.

Whole pumpkins are different from cut pumpkin
This advice is for whole, intact pumpkins. Once cut or sliced, pumpkin is a different food-storage case and should be refrigerated; curing does not apply to cut fruit. Decorative use also does not prevent spoilage, and damage or unsuitable storage temperatures still shorten the time it remains sound. The cited extension guidance does not establish a precise lifespan for carved pumpkins.
