1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo confirm whether a prospect was assigned to the AHL or called up to the NHL, check the NHL parent club’s official transactions page first. Then cross-check the AHL transaction listing and affiliate roster. Use the dated transaction wording—not a roster listing or an unofficial report alone—to identify what happened and when.
Where to check a player’s status
- Open the NHL parent club’s official transactions page. Search the player’s full name, then look for a dated entry using terms such as “assigned,” “recalled,” “returned,” or “placed on waivers for purpose of assignment.” The New York Islanders’ transaction history illustrates how a club may list assignments, recalls, returns from loan, and waiver placements separately.
- Cross-check the AHL. The AHL website provides Transactions, Team Rosters, and AHL-NHL Affiliations sections. A transaction entry can corroborate a move; the affiliate roster can help establish whether the player is currently listed with that club.
- Look for a team announcement with context. A club’s news or prospect page may be easier to search than its transaction log. For example, Edmonton’s prospect coverage has listed recalls from Bakersfield, while Nashville’s press releases include dated assignments to Milwaukee and recalls from the affiliate.
- Record the date, destination, and exact verb. If you find only an unofficial report, treat it as a lead and confirm it against a team or league page. Reopen the official listing when checking a live situation: a later recall, return, loan, or other move may have superseded an earlier notice.
What the transaction terms mean
Keep the team’s wording intact. These terms describe different events or stages, and a roster listing alone may not establish when or how a player moved.
- Assigned or reassigned to the AHL: the NHL club has announced a move to its AHL affiliate. Record the destination and announcement date.
- Recalled or called up: the NHL club has announced the player’s return from the AHL to its NHL roster.
- Returned on loan or returned to the affiliate: a recorded move back to the AHL club. It is not the same wording as a recall.
- Placed on waivers for purpose of assignment: this is a waiver-related step, not proof that the assignment has been completed. Look for a subsequent assignment notice before describing the player as assigned.
How to tell whether an AHL player was assigned by an NHL club
An AHL appearance or roster listing does not by itself prove that a player is an NHL prospect sent down under an NHL contract. The AHL’s FAQ explains that players without an AHL Standard Player’s Contract (SPC), Professional Try-Out (PTO), or Amateur Try-Out (ATO) are on NHL contracts and assigned to their AHL clubs by their parent teams. The WHL’s 2026 AHL tracker also describes players reaching AHL clubs through NHL-team assignments or ATOs. Check the transaction and contract context before describing an AHL-bound player’s route.
Choosing the right source for the question
| Source | Best use | What it may not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| NHL parent-club transaction page | Official, dated wording for a named player’s status change. | Whether a later move has superseded the entry; check the latest listing. |
| Club news or prospect page | A readable announcement and context for an assignment or recall. | A complete transaction history. |
| AHL transactions | League-level cross-check for recorded movement. | Contract details or a full explanation of the move. |
| AHL affiliate roster | Checking a player’s current listing with an affiliate. | The date or transaction that put the player there. |
Following games after an assignment
The AHL site links to VideoCenter and identifies FloHockey coverage, but those references do not establish whether a particular affiliate’s games are available in your region or under current service terms. Check the current AHL viewing information and the relevant service’s team and territory details before relying on it: AHL site and FloHockey.
