A Bitcoin transaction with 0 confirmations has not yet been included in a block; it may still be waiting for a miner to include it. Look up its transaction ID (txid) in the sending wallet or a block explorer, then check whether the transaction is still unconfirmed and what fee rate it offers. If the payment is urgent, the sender may be able to raise the fee using the wallet’s supported Replace-by-Fee (RBF) feature—but neither a fee estimate nor an RBF replacement guarantees confirmation in a particular block.
How to check Bitcoin confirmations
- Find the txid. Open the wallet involved in the payment and select the transaction to view its details. Use the transaction ID, not only the wallet’s general “pending” label.
- Check the network. If relevant, verify that the transaction is for Bitcoin mainnet rather than another network or asset.
- Look up the txid. Check it in the wallet or enter it into a block explorer. An explorer offers another view, but it observes its own data sources and may not match every node or wallet.
- Read the status. Look for whether it is unconfirmed or has a block height and confirmation count. If two sources disagree, treat that as a difference in what they can see—not proof by itself that the transaction is or is not circulating.
What the confirmation count means
- 0 confirmations: The transaction has been broadcast but is not yet included in a block. Do not treat an unconfirmed payment as final; Bitcoin’s payment-processing guidance calls for risk analysis when accepting one. Bitcoin Developer Guide: Payment Processing.
- 1 confirmation: The transaction is included in a mined block.
- More than 1: Each subsequent block adds another confirmation on top of the block containing the transaction.
Why a Bitcoin transaction can take time
Bitcoin block space is finite, so transactions compete for inclusion. A transaction’s fee rate—commonly shown in sat/vB, or satoshis per virtual byte—helps compare its offer with other transactions more meaningfully than the total fee alone. A low fee rate relative to current demand can mean a longer wait, but there is no reliable confirmation-time promise based on the fee alone.
A mempool is a node’s waiting area for valid transactions it has accepted but that have not yet appeared in a block. It is not a single, perfectly synchronized queue shared identically across the network: a transaction may appear in one node’s mempool and be absent from another’s. Local relay and acceptance policies also matter. Bitcoin Core’s getmempoolinfo reports data about the particular node queried, not a network-wide transaction count or status. Bitcoin Core’s estimatesmartfee can estimate a fee rate intended to begin confirmation within a requested number of blocks, if it can make an estimate. It is approximate and may be unavailable or stale as demand changes; the requested block target is not a deadline. Bitcoin Developer Reference: estimatesmartfee.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
What to do if your transaction is still unconfirmed
Wait if the payment is not urgent
If the transaction is visible as unconfirmed and there is no urgent need to change it, waiting may be the simplest option. Confirmation timing depends on competition for block space and what miners include; a slow transaction is not necessarily broken.
Consider an RBF fee bump if speed matters
Replace-by-Fee (RBF) can allow an unconfirmed transaction to be replaced with one that offers a higher fee. Bitcoin Core describes opt-in RBF as flagging a transaction as replaceable until it is confirmed. Whether a replacement is available depends on the original transaction, wallet support, and the receiving node’s mempool policy; the replacement must meet applicable acceptance conditions. It does not guarantee inclusion in the next block. Bitcoin Core: Opt-in RBF FAQ, BIP 125, and Bitcoin Core: Mempool Replacement Policy.

- Use the sending wallet’s documented fee-bump control, if it offers one. Bitcoin Core’s wallet RPC documentation describes
bumpfeefor replacing an unconfirmed wallet transaction. Bitcoin Developer Reference: bumpfee. - Review the replacement’s total fee and recipient amount before confirming it. Check the recipient address and any change details shown by the wallet.
- Authorize the replacement only if its added cost and effect on the payment are acceptable. Recipients may choose to wait for confirmation before treating a replaceable payment as received, as BIP 125 notes.
Bitcoin Core’s send RPC documentation uses sat/vB for fee rate and blocks for the confirmation target. Those settings describe a fee offer and target, not a promise about when confirmation will happen. Bitcoin Developer Reference: send.
Why manual rebroadcast may not help
Do not assume that rebroadcasting a transaction will speed it up. Bitcoin Core warns that unconditional manual rebroadcast sends the transaction to all peers and can reduce privacy by revealing its origin. Follow the sending wallet’s documented controls rather than using a raw rebroadcast command as a routine fix. Bitcoin Developer Reference: sendrawtransaction.

Protect your wallet while troubleshooting
- Never enter a seed phrase, private key, or wallet recovery words into a block explorer, website, or support chat to check a transaction.
- Do not treat a third-party “transaction accelerator” as a guarantee of confirmation.
- Before approving a replacement, verify the displayed recipient, change, fee, and total payment in the wallet itself.
