NHL teams do not use a league-wide formula or mandatory rotation to choose a starting goalie. The head coach makes the lineup decision, usually with input from the goalie coach, while weighing who is healthy, recent form, workload, rest, the opponent, and the schedule. Splitting starts in back-to-back games is common, but the backup is not automatically assigned the second game.
Who makes the starting-goalie decision?
The head coach chooses the starter. The goalie coach provides specialist input, assessing performance, physical health, and mental state and recommending a plan for both the starter and backup. That advice informs the decision; it does not replace the head coach’s authority.
There is no published NHL-wide scoring model that assigns fixed weights to these factors, and the sources do not establish an official league policy dictating which goalie must start. The decision is a team-level judgment based on the goalies available and the circumstances around that game.
What factors do coaches weigh?
Coaches balance several considerations rather than following a universal checklist with fixed priorities. The same factor can point in different directions: a high-stakes game may favor the goalie playing most consistently, while accumulated workload or an upcoming stretch of games may argue for rest.

- Availability and health: An injury or physical concern can rule out a goalie or affect how much work the staff is comfortable assigning.
- Recent performance and consistency: A goalie in strong form may earn more starts, particularly when the game matters to the standings.
- Workload and recovery: Coaches consider recent starts, expected work ahead, travel, schedule congestion, and the recovery time between games.
- Opponent and game importance: The matchup and the value of the game can influence whether a team leans toward its preferred starter or distributes work.
- Rhythm and confidence: Some goalies feel sharper with frequent game action; others benefit more from rest and focused practice. Those preferences are individual.
- Confidence in the tandem: If the staff trusts both goalies, sharing starts becomes easier. A backup still needs preparation and game-like work to stay ready when starts are less frequent.
How do teams handle back-to-back games?
Two games on consecutive days are the clearest scheduling test. A Seattle Kraken feature on NHL.com described splitting back-to-back starts as a recent NHL standard. Then-coach Dave Hakstol said, “Typically you’re going to have a split on the back-to-backs.” That describes a common practice, not a rule that binds every team.
When teams do split the games, the order can depend on the opponent and how long each goalie has been out of action. The travel involved also matters: an overnight trip or a compressed recovery window can change the practical value of starting one goalie rather than the other.

The same 2022 feature recounted Eric Tulsky’s 2013 analysis as finding that using the same goalie on consecutive days reduced save percentage by just over 11 percent. That is a historical estimate reported secondhand by the Kraken/NHL.com, not a current settled measure: the article also noted later analyses by SportsMEDIA Technology’s Andrew Thomas and The Athletic’s Dom Luszczyszyn suggested the effect might be less significant. It should not be treated as a statistic that dictates today’s lineup decisions.
Why rest and playing time can point in opposite directions
Rest may help a goalie recover physically and mentally, but too much time without a start can make it harder to maintain timing and confidence. NHL.com’s 2024 reporting on backup goalies describes the challenge of staying game-ready through irregular starts. Coaches may use game-like drills and video discussions to help backups prepare, while trying to preserve useful goalie-specific practice without adding unnecessary workload.

In 2021 playoff-preparation coverage, Anaheim goalie coach Sudarshan Maharaj emphasized that deployment needs to reflect the individual goalie’s habits and season workload. His comments were about that postseason context, not a universal current rule. The broader point is that there is no single ideal interval between starts for every goalie.
Does the approach change in the playoffs?
Yes, the balance can change, but there is no universal playoff rotation. During the regular season, a team may need to weigh a game’s immediate standings value against the goal of distributing work and keeping its second goalie ready. Near the postseason, teams may plan rest in advance, particularly if a playoff berth is secured; a team still fighting for position may instead rely more heavily on its most consistent goalie.

NHL.com’s May 2021 reporting illustrates the range of choices: Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said a rest decision after clinching had been planned, while other coaches discussed rhythm and alternating starts. Those examples show how teams reasoned in that season; they do not establish what teams will do in every current playoff series.

On a given game day, the practical question is simply, “Who is your starting goaltender?” The answer reflects the staff’s current assessment, not a permanent rank or a league-mandated rotation. A goalie listed as the backup for one game may start the next because of workload, recovery, matchup, or the team’s plan for the schedule ahead.
