FuseSoC helps organize reusable hardware-description-language (HDL) code and run the build or simulation flow for a design. It discovers cores in configured libraries, resolves their dependencies, and hands the selected flow to Edalize, which configures and launches the EDA tools you choose. FuseSoC is not itself a simulator, synthesis engine, or FPGA vendor tool.
What FuseSoC does
FuseSoC is a package manager and build system for HDL projects. Its core idea is to describe reusable design components as cores, then use those descriptions to assemble and run a larger design. This can make it easier to reuse IP and build or simulate system-on-chip designs.
A core is described by a .core file. That file identifies the component and can declare its source files, dependencies, and targets. A target describes an intended use of the core, such as simulation or synthesis; the available targets depend on how that core was authored.
FuseSoC searches the core libraries configured for the workspace. Those libraries may be local or remote. Starting from a selected top-level core, it locates required dependencies and prepares the selected target. Edalize then configures and runs the chosen EDA tool or flow.

How the pieces fit together
- Core description: The
.corefile declares design inputs, dependencies, and targets. - FuseSoC: Finds cores in configured libraries, resolves dependencies, and prepares a build for the selected target.
- Edalize: Sets up and launches the EDA tool or flow selected for that build.
- EDA tools: Perform the work, such as simulation, synthesis, or static analysis. They must be installed and configured separately as required by the chosen flow.
This separation means a project can often be brought under FuseSoC without changing its HDL source files or directory structure. The core description and tool configuration provide the integration layer. The official documentation describes the CAPI2 core-file format in its building-design guide.
Install FuseSoC and try the documented example
The project README says FuseSoC works on Linux, Windows, and macOS and can be installed as a Python package with pip. The package metadata requires Python >=3.10, <4 and lists Edalize as a dependency; check the current project README and package metadata for up-to-date installation requirements.

- Internal clock speeds exceeding 450MHz, On-chip analog-to-digital converter (XADC), Programmable over JTAG and Quad-SPI Flash
- 256MB DDR3L with a 16-bit bus @ 667MHz, 16MB Quad-SPI Flash, USB-JTAG Programming circuitry, Powered from USB or any 7V-15V source
- 10/100 Mbps Ethernet, USB-UART Bridge
- 4 Switches, 4 Buttons, 1 Reset Button, 4 LEDs, 4 RGB LEDs, 4 Pmod connectors, shield connector
After installing FuseSoC, the README’s quick start follows this sequence:
- Create a workspace directory and enter it.
- Add the
fusesoc-coreslibrary to the workspace. - List the cores FuseSoC discovers.
- Run the documented I2C simulation target with
fusesoc run --target=sim i2c, provided the required simulator is installed.
The command is the README’s documented example, not a guarantee that every installation can run it unchanged. The selected core must expose that target, and its simulator and any required configuration must be available. Consult the installation guide and user guide for setup and concepts.

Choose a target for the result you need
fusesoc run starts the flow associated with a core’s selected target. The output is determined by that target and its configured tools; a run may produce simulation results, an FPGA bitstream, or static-analysis output.
| Goal | What the target may do | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Simulation | Prepare and run a simulation flow | The core has a simulation target, and its required simulator is installed and configured. |
| FPGA implementation | Run a synthesis or implementation flow that may produce a bitstream | The target, FPGA family, vendor tool flow, operating system, and any board support match your intended hardware. |
| Static analysis | Run a lint or other static-analysis flow | The core exposes an appropriate target and the selected analysis tool is installed and configured. |
Targets and Edalize flows vary by core and tool. A command that works for one target is not automatically portable to another toolchain. The build documentation explains how to build designs, while the EDA-flow documentation covers the tool-flow layer.

What FuseSoC does not provide
FuseSoC organizes the project and invokes a flow; it does not eliminate the need to obtain and configure the EDA software that performs simulation, synthesis, implementation, or analysis. Tool availability, licensing, operating-system support, and project-specific settings depend on the selected tool and flow. The Edalize and EDA-flow documentation describes this integration role.
Likewise, a generated bitstream does not establish that a design works on any arbitrary FPGA board. Before choosing hardware, verify the design’s target, FPGA family, vendor software and flow, operating system, and available board support. The project README describes a board-oriented learning project, but it does not establish compatibility with a particular development board.

Is FuseSoC worth learning?
FuseSoC is most useful when you want repeatable ways to discover, reuse, and build HDL components, especially when a design has dependencies or multiple targets. Its value is less immediate if you only need to open a one-off HDL file in a vendor tool and do not need a reusable core or automated build description.
A community question phrased as “why not many people use Edalize and Fuse soc?” is one person’s wording, not evidence about adoption or popularity. The practical issue for a newcomer is clearer: FuseSoC provides a structured route from core descriptions to tool flows, but you still need suitable EDA tools and configuration. For teams that need help, the project README lists professional services including feature work, bug fixes, training, core-library setup, and migration.
