He is expected to play in the AHL unless the club recalls or moves him again. The assignment is a roster change: by itself, it does not mean the player was released, explain why the team made the move, or determine his pay.
What an AHL assignment changes
The transaction moves a player from his NHL club’s roster to an AHL roster. The Carolina Hurricanes’ transaction primer describes a loan as moving a player to another roster and a recall as bringing him back to the NHL team. The AHL team is commonly the NHL club’s affiliate, but the transaction announcement identifies the destination.
“Sent down” is informal shorthand. In transaction language, look for terms such as assigned or loaned. Neither term alone says the player’s contract has ended.
Does the player have to clear waivers?
Not always. Waivers are a separate process that may be required before a player can be loaned to the AHL. A waiver-exempt player can generally be assigned without being exposed to a claim. If waivers are required, other NHL clubs have an opportunity to claim the player before his current club can loan him down. If no club claims him, the original club may assign him, subject to the applicable rules. The NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement governs; the Hurricanes’ primer provides a general overview.

Recent announcements show the distinction: on September 30, 2026, Carolina said goaltender Cayden Primeau was placed on waivers for the purpose of reassignment to the AHL’s Chicago Wolves. The Islanders’ September 27, 2026 announcement listed assignments of Kashawn Aitcheson, Cole Eiserman and Isaiah George to AHL Hamilton, while separately saying Vitek Vanecek had been placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment. See the Carolina announcement and the Islanders announcement.
The Hurricanes’ primer gives a general threshold: after a player clears waivers, the right to send him back down can expire after 10 NHL games or 30 days on the active roster. It notes different treatment for emergency recalls. This is not a player-specific eligibility test; the player’s transaction history, recall circumstances and CBA rules matter.

Can a player be called back up?
Yes. An AHL assignment can be temporary, and the NHL club can recall the player. Waiver requirements and the type of recall can affect what the club may do afterward. In particular, emergency recalls are treated differently in the general threshold described above, so a transaction headline alone is not enough to determine a player’s next eligibility.
Does the player earn less in the AHL?
Not necessarily. A two-way contract specifies separate NHL and AHL salary rates; the AHL rate is lower, according to the Flyers’ explanation. But not every player assigned to the AHL has a two-way contract, and “sent down” does not establish what salary applies. The signed contract and applicable agreement are needed to make a claim about a particular player’s pay.

For example, Philadelphia announced on March 5, 2026, that Garrett Wilson had signed a two-way NHL contract and was placed on waivers for assignment to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. That announcement illustrates one player’s arrangement, not a rule for all assignments. See the Flyers’ announcement.
Why would a team send a player down?
Common contexts include training-camp roster cuts, opening an NHL roster spot, giving a player AHL playing time, or responding to changing lineup and roster needs. Those are possible reasons, not conclusions that can be drawn from a particular assignment notice. The notice alone does not establish poor performance, discipline, injury or a loss of confidence.

What about young players drafted from the CHL?
Some players drafted from the Canadian Hockey League are subject to an age-based limit on assignment to the AHL and may have to remain with the NHL club or return to junior hockey until they meet the applicable age requirement. The rule depends on the player’s circumstances and the current agreement; it should not be generalized to every young player. The Flyers’ transaction analysis discusses a particular player’s situation, while the CBA governs the applicable rules.
How to read an assignment announcement
- Find the transaction verb. “Assigned” or “loaned” indicates the roster move; “placed on waivers” describes a separate step that may come before assignment.
- Check the destination and date. The notice identifies the AHL club and when the transaction was announced.
- Look for the waiver outcome. A waiver placement does not itself say whether another NHL club claimed the player or whether the assignment was completed.
- Check contract details separately. A transaction notice does not establish whether the player has a two-way contract or what salary rate applies.
- For future moves, check eligibility and recall history. General summaries cannot replace the CBA and the player’s specific transaction record.
The current governing agreement is available on the NHL’s CBA page, which lists the agreement and the July 11, 2025 MOU.
