Start with the ingredient list, then compare nutrition using the serving size on each jar. Check the oils, nuts, cheeses and herbs against your preferences, read the allergen statement for your dietary needs, and follow the storage directions on the package you buy. “Pesto” alone does not tell you exactly what is in the jar.

Decide which pesto style you want

For a classic Genovese-style reference, the Consorzio del Pesto Genovese lists Genovese basil, extra virgin olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano (or a Grana Padano variant), Pecorino Sardo, pine nuts, garlic and salt. Its traditional recipe also describes green beans and potatoes as accompaniments cooked with pasta, not ingredients in the pesto itself.

This is a culinary reference, not proof that every commercial pesto must follow the same formula or that deviations violate a legal standard. Commercial recipes vary. If a basil-forward profile or particular ingredients matter to you, check the actual jar rather than relying on “Pesto Genovese” or “traditional” wording alone.

Read the ingredient list in order

The U.S. FDA says ingredients generally appear in descending order by weight, subject to exemptions. Ingredients near the beginning therefore make up more of the product than those listed later. Some ingredients may be declared collectively as “flavors” or “spices,” so the label may not name every constituent individually. For more on how ingredient declarations work, see the FDA’s Types of Food Ingredients guidance.

#1 Best Overall
Whole Foods Market, Basil Pesto, 6.5 Ounce
  • 6.5 oz traditional basil pesto sauce
  • Made with authentic Italian cheeses
  • Perfect for pasta, sandwiches, and more
  • Premium quality Italian sauce
  • Whole Foods Market quality guaranteed

Compare the oils, nuts, cheeses, herbs and other ingredients that matter to your taste, budget or diet. A substitution is not automatically a sign of poor quality; the useful question is whether that formula suits you. “Natural” by itself is not proof of safety or quality: FDA says ingredients meet the same safety standard whether naturally or artificially derived. See FDA information on food additives and GRAS ingredients.

Two market-specific manufacturer examples show why labels matter:

  • Barilla Pesto alla Genovese, UK: its listed ingredients begin with sunflower oil, followed by basil (30%), cashews and Parmigiano Reggiano PDO cheese (5%); extra virgin olive oil appears later. The page lists a 190 g pack. See Barilla’s product page.
  • Classico Traditional Basil Pesto Sauce & Spread, U.S.: its ingredients begin with basil and soybean oil, followed by garlic, Parmesan, olive oil and salt. The page lists 13.5 oz and 8.1 oz sizes. See Classico’s product page.

These examples illustrate different formulations; they are not a ranking or a representative survey. They also do not establish that a particular oil, nut, shorter ingredient list or cheese choice will taste better.

Compare nutrition using the serving size

Before comparing calories, sodium, saturated fat or sugars, check the serving size shown on each Nutrition Facts label. Nutrition.gov’s Food Labels page links to resources for using package labels to make informed food choices.

Rank #3
Barilla Creamy Genovese Pesto, 6.2oz., 4PK (Pasta Sauce & Spread)
  • Smooth, creamy texture and timeless Italian flavor; ideal as spaghetti sauce for family dinners
  • Blend of fragrant basil and grated cheeses
  • Carefully crafted from high-quality Italian ingredients for cellentani pasta dishes
  • Pairs perfectly with your favorite Barilla pasta and Barilla pasta sauce
  • Can be also be added to sandwiches, served as a dip and more

For one product-specific example, Kraft Heinz lists Classico at 230 calories, 590 mg sodium, 4 g saturated fat and 0 g added sugar per 1/4 cup (62 g). Those are figures for that product, not averages or typical values for jarred pesto. Compare the numbers with your own needs and the amount you expect to use; one nutrient or oil source alone does not make pesto categorically healthy or unhealthy.

Check allergens and dietary claims on the exact jar

Read both the ingredient statement and any allergen or precautionary statement. Product labels can differ by recipe and market, so do not transfer one brand’s claims to another jar.

If you need vegan, dairy-free, nut-free, gluten-free or another specific diet, check the package you are buying. If it does not answer an important question, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming ordinary pesto is suitable.
