Choose a TP-Link Wi-Fi 6E router if you own devices that support Wi-Fi 6E and can use the extra 6 GHz band. If your devices do not support 6 GHz, or your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network already meets your needs, a Wi-Fi 6 router is the more practical choice. Check your phones, computers, tablets, and other important clients before paying for 6E.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E?

Wi-Fi 6E extends Wi-Fi 6 by adding the 6 GHz band. Wi-Fi 6 operates on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; Wi-Fi 6E can use those bands as well as 6 GHz. The amount of 6 GHz spectrum available varies by region, so local rules and the router version matter. See TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 6E explanation.

The extra band is not a general speed upgrade that every connected device can use. A device needs 6 GHz capability—such as Wi-Fi 6E support—to connect on that band. Older Wi-Fi clients can still connect to supported 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz networks, but they cannot use a router’s 6 GHz radio. TP-Link makes this client requirement clear on its Archer AXE5400 product page.

Which type should you choose?

Choose Wi-Fi 6 if your devices use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

A Wi-Fi 6 router is a sensible choice when the devices you use most do not support 6 GHz and your current network’s bands meet your needs. In that situation, a Wi-Fi 6E router’s extra band may go unused. Compare the actual features and ports of the specific models rather than assuming a higher AX-class label or larger combined advertised rate will improve your internet connection.

Choose Wi-Fi 6E if compatible devices can use 6 GHz

Wi-Fi 6E is worth considering when you have 6 GHz-capable devices and want them to use the additional band. Confirm that the devices you care about support Wi-Fi 6E; a router alone cannot give an older client 6 GHz capability. A Wi-Fi 6E router remains backward-compatible with earlier Wi-Fi bands on the TP-Link models cited here, so older devices can still connect on supported bands.

Check the client devices before buying

Make an inventory of the phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices that matter most on your network. Look up their Wi-Fi capabilities in their specifications; do not infer 6 GHz support just because a device supports Wi-Fi 6. If none of your important clients supports Wi-Fi 6E, the added 6 GHz radio is not a reason by itself to choose 6E.

  • WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
  • Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
  • True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³

  • Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential

TP-Link’s Archer AXE75 page gives an example of a Wi-Fi 6E router’s advertised radio rates: 574 Mbps at 2.4 GHz, 2402 Mbps at 5 GHz, and 2402 Mbps at 6 GHz. These are manufacturer-listed physical link rates, not measured internet speeds or a promise that a client will reach those rates. Actual results depend on the client and network conditions.

Archer AXE75 AXE5400 tri-band Wi-Fi 6E; 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz TP-Link lists 574 Mbps at 2.4 GHz, 2402 Mbps at 5 GHz, and 2402 Mbps at 6 GHz; it also lists a 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port. The radio rates are advertised physical link rates, not internet-throughput results. TP-Link describes its nominal range as 2–3 bedrooms; treat that as a manufacturer label, not a coverage guarantee. Check the exact hardware revision and regional listing.

Deco XE75 Wi-Fi 6E mesh system The U.S. datasheet identifies router and access point modes. Consider it when whole-home coverage is the main concern, rather than treating it as a standalone router. If coverage is the problem, consider mesh separately

A new Wi-Fi standard does not fix every dead zone. If coverage across multiple rooms or floors is your main concern, compare a standalone router with a mesh system and consider whether wired backhaul is practical. The Deco XE75 is a TP-Link Wi-Fi 6E mesh option; its U.S. datasheet describes router and access point modes, but your home’s layout and placement determine whether a mesh setup is appropriate. Do not assume that choosing 6E alone will solve a coverage problem.

What to compare beyond Wi-Fi generation

  • Client compatibility: Identify which devices can use 6 GHz before choosing 6E.
  • Home layout and coverage: Consider router placement and whether mesh is needed for dead zones.
  • Wired connections: Check the ports you actually need. The AXE75, for example, lists a 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port.
  • Exact model and revision: TP-Link product pages distinguish hardware versions; verify the version sold in your region.
  • Regional availability and price: Spectrum rules, product availability, and current prices vary. Compare the current local listing rather than relying on a specification page for another market.
