Some warmth is normal when a game heavily uses the processor or graphics hardware; stop playing if the phone becomes uncomfortably hot or displays a temperature warning.
Why gaming can make a phone warm and drain its battery
Games that use graphics- or processor-intensive features can make a phone feel warmer and consume more power. Apple says this kind of warmth can be expected during intensive gaming. Samsung likewise warns that its Game Booster Performance mode may heat a device because it uses more battery.
Warmth alone does not mean the phone is damaged. What matters is whether it becomes uncomfortably hot, shows a temperature warning, or stays hot for a prolonged period.
Lower the game’s power demands
Reduce graphics quality or frame rate
Open the game’s graphics, display, or performance settings, if available, and try lowering graphics quality or the frame rate. These changes can reduce the work the phone is doing, though the exact options and effect vary by game. The trade-off is that animation may look less smooth or detailed.

Choose a less demanding device mode
On supported Samsung phones, open Gaming Hub > More > Game Booster > Game optimisation and choose Standard or Battery saver instead of Performance. Samsung describes Standard as balancing performance and battery time, while Battery saver prioritizes power saving during play. Performance prioritizes high performance and may increase heat. Samsung notes that efficiency varies by game; it does not publish a single expected battery or temperature improvement.
Samsung Game Booster controls are not available on every device or in every game. Other Android phones may use different labels or provide no equivalent setting.

Use automatic frame-rate control if available
Some supported versions of Samsung Game Booster can automatically adjust frame rate to help prevent overheating. The feature’s availability depends on the phone, software version, and game. Game Booster may also show temperature and memory status, which can help you see when the device is under strain.
Adjust the screen and connection
Turn down screen brightness
Set brightness to a comfortable level rather than leaving it unnecessarily high. Apple lists high brightness among the factors that use more energy. The exact battery saving will depend on the phone and how brightly you need the display.

Prefer Wi-Fi for online games when practical
For internet-connected games, Apple recommends using Wi-Fi where possible because it uses less battery power than a mobile network, and recommends a strong signal. This is battery-use guidance, not a guarantee that Wi-Fi will noticeably cool every phone or game.
Play in a cooler place
Move out of direct sunlight and avoid hot surroundings such as a hot car. Ambient temperature matters: Apple says iPhone and iPad are designed for use at 0–35°C (32–95°F). That operating range is specific to Apple devices, not a universal limit for all phones.

Apple’s battery-maintenance guidance says the ideal ambient temperature for iPhone performance is 16–22°C (62–72°F), and advises avoiding use or charging above 35°C (95°F) because high temperatures can permanently reduce battery lifespan. These figures apply to Apple devices. More generally, a cooler environment is a sensible first step when a phone is heating during play.
Check battery usage before considering service
On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Battery to review app-level battery use and the battery-health information available for your device. This can help distinguish heavy game use from a broader battery issue. Apple advises considering service if Battery Health shows Service; replacing a battery is not a default fix for normal gaming heat or game-related drain.

Battery aging reflects several factors, including temperature history and charging pattern. If a device is unusually warm outside gaming, drains rapidly across ordinary use, or reports a service condition, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and support options rather than assuming the game is the only cause.

- Stop playing if the phone feels uncomfortably hot or displays a temperature warning.
- Move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight. For an iPhone or iPad temperature warning, Apple says to turn the device off and allow it to cool.
- Wait before resuming. Samsung advises not using a Galaxy device for a while if it overheats or feels hot for a prolonged period.
- Seek support if the problem persists. Samsung recommends contacting Samsung or an authorized service centre if prolonged overheating continues.
Do not put a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance to move it to a cooler environment and let it cool naturally.
How to choose the right settings
