1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRead an NHL injury update as a dated snapshot, not a diagnosis or a promise about the next game. Check who made the statement and when, then separate what the player did (such as practicing), what the club says about availability, and what roster rules allow. Labels such as “day to day,” “game-time decision” and Injured Reserve each answer different questions—and none alone confirms a return date.
Start with the source, date and exact claim
NHL Status Report articles collect lineup and injury updates, but the wording may come from a coach or another source. Note the publication date and time and whether the statement is attributed. A later update can change the picture, so prefer the newest attributable statement while retaining the chronology when the change matters. An older forecast should not outweigh a newer availability update.
Classify each statement before drawing a conclusion:
- Observed activity: what the player did, such as taking part in practice.
- Availability: whether the team says the player is available for a particular game.
- Roster status: whether the player is on a list such as Injured Reserve and what rules apply.
- Medical evaluation: what the source actually discloses about assessment or clearance.
These are not interchangeable. Practicing is an observation; being available tonight is a lineup statement; being eligible for activation is a roster-rule matter.

What common NHL injury-report terms mean
| Report wording | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Day to day | The player’s availability is uncertain over a short horizon. | A return in a specific number of days, a particular game, or a medical recovery schedule. |
| Game-time decision | Availability remains unresolved near game time. | That the player will play. Wait for explicit lineup or availability confirmation. |
| Practiced / full participant | The player took part in the activity described by the report. | Final game availability or medical details not stated in the report. |
| Injured Reserve (IR) | A roster designation with minimum ineligibility and medical and administrative rules. | That the player will return as soon as the minimum period ends. |
| No timetable | The report gives no return date. | A sound basis for estimating one. |
| Upper-body / lower-body / undisclosed | The broad public description the source chose to provide. | A specific diagnosis, severity, or treatment plan. |
NHL Status Reports have used day-to-day wording while noting that a player’s status for upcoming games was not yet determined. They have also described a player practicing while separately saying he would be available for one of the next two games. Look for that explicit availability statement rather than inferring it from practice alone. NHL Status Report examples illustrate why the distinction matters.
Upper-body, lower-body and undisclosed are reporting categories, not diagnoses. Report only what the source says; do not infer the injured body part, severity or treatment from a broad label.

What Injured Reserve does—and does not—tell you
The NHL’s Hockey Operations Guidelines describe ordinary IR placement for an injury that makes a player physically unable to play for a minimum of seven days after the injury. The league guidance says a player on IR is ineligible to compete for at least seven days. The club’s medical staff makes the injury determination under club medical standards. This is a roster designation and minimum ineligibility interval, not a prediction that recovery will take seven days.
The cited NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement says activation eligibility can begin on the eighth day following the injury, or later, when the player has been medically cleared by the club physician; the club must also complete the required activation notice. Eligibility is not the same as clearance, activation or an expected return. Because league guidance and agreement terms can change, verify the operative versions before relying on these thresholds for a current roster decision.

Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR) is a separate roster designation. An NHL Status Report in 2026 described 10 games and 24 days as LTIR minimums in that example. That is what the article reported, not a current general-rule reference; do not apply those numbers as a universal current rule without an up-to-date primary league source. NHL Status Report.
How to interpret concussion-protocol updates
Concussion protocol is not just another injury label. The NHL/NHLPA concussion protocol published for 2022-23 describes a managed evaluation and graded progression, with club medical personnel and the club physician supervising individualized assessment and return decisions. It states that a player diagnosed with a concussion after acute evaluation must not return to play or practice on the same day, even if symptoms resolve. That protocol document is specifically for the 2022-23 season. It supports describing what that edition required, but does not establish that it is the latest edition. For a current case, rely on the team’s explicit update and confirm the applicable protocol edition rather than assuming a past document remains current.

- Record the timestamp and source. Note the date and time, publication and whether the statement is attributed to a coach or another source.
- Identify the kind of information. Mark each statement as practice activity, roster status, medical evaluation or game availability.
- Keep the wording’s certainty intact. Treat “day to day” and “game-time decision” as unresolved availability, not a forecast.
- Check for a later, explicit lineup update. A practice report or an IR eligibility date is not confirmation that the player will dress.
- Separate rule eligibility from individual clearance. For IR, a date when activation may become permissible does not replace medical clearance or the club’s required administrative step.
- State only what is disclosed. If the report says upper-body, lower-body or undisclosed, do not turn that into a diagnosis.
For example, if Monday’s report calls a player day to day and Tuesday’s says he practiced, the second item updates the activity record but does not establish game availability. If a later coach statement says he is available tonight, that is the relevant lineup information. If instead the player is on IR and has reached the earliest eligibility date, the date alone still does not establish medical clearance or activation.
