Start the eligible player with the best scoring-adjusted projection and expected role—not automatically the player labeled “WR” or “flex.” A flex is a lineup slot, not a position: depending on your league, it may accept a running back, wide receiver, or tight end. The right choice depends on your scoring rules, this week’s opportunity, projections, and player availability.
First, confirm what the lineup slot allows
Check the exact vacant slot in your league. ESPN’s general flex definition permits a running back, wide receiver, or tight end, but custom leagues can use different roster settings. If the open spot is specifically a WR slot, a player at another position cannot fill it unless your league’s settings allow that. If it is a flex, compare every eligible player rather than limiting the decision to two receivers.
Let your scoring format shape the comparison
In ESPN’s standard PPR format, each reception earns a point; in non-PPR scoring, catches earn no additional point. Leagues may customize reception scoring, so check your settings rather than assuming you have full PPR, half-PPR, or standard rules. ESPN’s scoring-format guide describes these formats.

- PPR: A player expected to catch more passes can gain value from reception points. That may favor a high-volume receiver or a pass-catching running back.
- Non-PPR: A catch itself adds no point, so compare projected yardage and touchdowns along with expected role.
- Half-PPR or custom scoring: Use the actual points your league awards, including any bonuses. A generic format label may not capture your rules.
Compare role and weekly projections
For a receiver, expected targets are a useful measure of opportunity; for a running back, compare expected touches and receiving involvement. Targets are a guide to opportunity, not a guarantee of catches or points. NFL.com Fantasy Managing Editor Graham Barfield summed up the receiver and tight end principle this way: “At the end of the day, we’re chasing targets when it comes to receivers and tight ends, no matter if you play in standard or PPR leagues.” Barfield’s NFL.com article also reported a historical position-group comparison: across the six seasons discussed, WR25–WR36 averaged 2.3 more PPR points per game than RB25–RB36, while the RB group averaged 0.4 more standard points per game than the WR group. Those circa-2019 figures describe that sample, not current rankings or a prediction for an individual matchup.
Use current-week projections as estimates, not promises. NFL Fantasy describes comparing the projected point difference between a starter and bench option, and ESPN lists weekly projected points among roster information. A practical start/sit checklist
- Identify the exact open slot. Check whether it is a WR slot or a flex, and confirm the league’s eligible positions.
- Apply your league’s scoring. Account for reception points and any custom bonuses before weighing a receiver against a running back or tight end.
- Compare likely involvement. Review a receiver’s expected targets and a running back’s expected touches and receiving role.
- Use this week’s projections as a cross-check. Compare expected points for the candidates in a tool that reflects your scoring where possible; treat the figures as estimates.
- Check availability and kickoff timing. Review the latest official player status before game time and check your platform’s lock deadline. ESPN says roster moves involving a player can be made until that player’s team is scheduled to begin its game in the scoring period, subject to platform rules. See ESPN’s lineup and roster guidance.
When no single answer is possible
There is no reliable player-specific pick without the candidate names, league scoring and slot rules, the relevant week, and current availability information. Once you have those details, select the eligible player whose role and scoring-adjusted weekly projection make the strongest case.
